Audible Recommendations

I’ve just joined Audible after reading lots of recommendations on MN.
I’m looking for distractions for a spell in hospital so things to listen to that are gripping or hilarious or otherwise ideal for taking me out of my current surroundings and making time pass more quickly! Maybe a big ask?! I’m generally open to many different genres and types of reading. Thanks!

It's a radio comedy drama series rather than a novel, but Cabin Pressure is the dog's bollocks.

I am loving all these recommendations! Want to listen to them all IMMEDIATELY! I love podcasts too so will enjoy dipping into them.
The ‘couldn’t put it down’ effect is exactly what I’m after to be able just to drift off and enjoy for a longer period of time. Will probably be snoring my head off in seconds though!

I love audible! Got through the whole expanse series and everything by Robin Hobb.

The Martian is so good (I could listen to the narrator read the phone book and enjoy it!) but the book is great.

That's all no good if you don't like sci-fi or fantasy though!

Also, if you want a little comic relief get some of the free listens of radio shows.

  • Paul Sinha - History Revision. It's funny, charming, and has so many really great little stories you've never heard in history but told in such a chatty way! And there's a load of series of The Unbelieveable Truth; it's hosted by David Mitchell and is just a great distraction. They're all free!

Life after Life/ A God in Ruins -both by Kate Atkinson. Brilliant and have really stayed with me long after finishing. I’m also a big fan of Paula Daly books, I think it is always the same narrator who is excellent. I’ve enjoyed some Lianne Moriaty audiobooks but feel they get a bit samey after a while.

I tend to explore by favourite narrator - Benedict Cumberbatch's voice is dreamy and makes me sleepy - he's narrated lots including Casanova. Tom Hiddleston narrates High Rise, another low dreamy voice to get me off to sleep!

Make sure you download BBC iPlayer radio as well - so many comedy and drama episodes for free!

Omg I started Ready Player One this morning and am hooked! Not usually my type of book and I was worried it was a bit teenagey to start but I can’t stop listening now.

Ooh interested to see the recommendation for West Cork. The guy was pointed out to me in the farmers market when I was there last summer.

Downloading it now

My parents are from West Cork - feel like I’ve been hearing about that case forever

Loads of great recommendations.

I recently listened to West Cork - gripping stuff.

Love Nina read by Nina Stibbe was lovely and funny. A nice, easy distracting listen for hospital.

The End of the Affair read by Colin Firth was excellent.

Gentlemen and Players/Different Class by Joanne Harris and the Simon Serrailer series by Susan Hill. All read by Steven Pacey who has a great reading voice I think. If I like a reader I tend to search for for by them and save them on a wish list.

Any Human Heart by William Boyd. Can’t remeber the reader but I loved listening to this last year.

Listening to David Copperfield at the moment which is fab.

Stephen Fry reads the complete Sherlock Holmes stories. Over 70 hours for 1 credit!

The Falco mysteries by Lindsay Davies. I love the domestic Roman details alongside the stories.
