what else might he like?

He read and liked Touching the Void, but recommendations don't have to be mountain climbing related. Non-fiction essential though!

He doesn't read much and I'm keen to find him some decent new books.

Shake hands with the devil (written by UN general at time of Rwandan massacre, maybe bit too long a book though? )

Canoeing the Congo by Phil Harwood - this guy did it properly, way better book and story and amount achieved than the blood river Tim butcher one which I've also read and found disappointing. Phil Harwood is ex marines IIRC and a top kayaker and totally mental. He made a film of it too. Page turner style of writing.
