I am about 200 pages in and might have to stop, because it is giving me horrible nightmares and I have only got as far as the Long March is it worth persevering? it really is a shocking book, although not terrifically balanced or objective, perhaps understandably

No. But there was great suffering in China during those times, so I am not surprised you are getting nightmares. I can't go there

Yes, I made it through. I'm afraid it doesn't get any more cheerful.

i'm re-reading wild swans atm and am half way through. so this will be next to read. it's a grim time

southeastastra, I'm afraid DS2 (9) is eyeing up my copy of Wild Swans. He was all the more interested when I told him it was about people having a terrible time in China. I think I may have to hide it for a few years.

I have had this on the bookshelf for a year or so, as I've never plucked uo the courage to read it!

oh blimey, we bought it when it came out and I was pg with ds1. Tried reading it when sleep-deprived and feeding all night in the early weeks and never got very far... Dp finished it though and, well, don't know if 'enjoyed' is the right word, but certainly found it very interesting. Must get back to it one of these days.
