I came across the second part of these books totally by accident in the library and was totally enthralled. The only difficulty is that the second book in the series reveals an awful lot of the plot in the first book which I am reading at the moment.
I would heartily recommend them but get then in the right order which is:-
The Various Haunts of Men
The Pure in Heart
The Risk of Darkness
There might be others, but I don't know about them

I agree, they are fantastic, I am addicted to them. It's worth checking out her blog as well

Is that the same Susan Hill who wrote The Woman in Black? That is a fab book.

Yes it is. I didn't read the book but saw the play and actually screamed at one point. Can't remember what happened exactly, but we all, the whole audience just screamed.

I have only read The Various Haunts of Men with a book group. We all thought it was poor. The "hero" scarcely appeared although the writer seemed to have a crush on him (a la Lord Peter Wimsey/Dorothy L Sayers). The more interesting main character of the book was killed off and the murderer could be worked out chapters before the end because of the heavy handed clues. The doctors in my book group thought the description of the family life of the female GP was hilarious!
(Oh dear, made some enemies here!)

Enemies Lilymaid? Because you didn't get the same pleasure out of a book a few of us hugely enjoy? You must have been in a very intellectual minded bookgroup, picking up on Dorothy Sayers being in love with Lord Peter Whimsey . What books do you enjoy?

I do remember enjoying other Susan Hill books (with the possible exception of Family which I read when TTC DS2!). Yes it is a rather intellectual book group, but members admit that between reading the book group choices they may resort to a few Aga Sagas/ Maeve Binchy etc! Recently published books I have enjoyed: William Boyd - "Restless"; Irene Nemirovsky - "Suite Francaise"; Marina Lewycka "A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian".I always enjoy books by Alexander McCall Smith, because of their general optimism, and by Anne Tyler.
Question posed by the book group - did she write these novels hoping that they would end up as a TV series?

Yes, Alexander McCall Smith, how much poorer we would be without him.
I don't think I've ever read any of the other authors you mention, so thank you for some wonderful ideas.
