Hi I know this book has been discussed before, but hopefully a few more Mners ahve read this fab book now.

It is the one advertised at the top of the page.

"A group of intelligent British mothers, desperate to find like- minded women with whom to share problems and discuss children, marriage, work, and friendship... Mumsnet 2007? No, the CCC, a magazine established in 1935."

I am the grand daughter of one of the members of the CCC and wondered whether any other MNers have CCC roots?

I am just as blunt and outspoken as my gran though!!! :0)

I'm so pleased to see this thread! I was going to have to resurrect an old one I saw that inspired me to buy. Arrived two days ago and I'm loving it.

I need to talk about Isis' story if there's anyone who's read this bit yet. I'm really upset by what she went through and how they treated a woman in her situation at that time. I'm really outraged by it all in fact (!!!) and would love to talk to someone about it...! anyone?

Great!

NappyValley · 13/05/2007 19:57

I haven't got that far either. But would love to discuss this further.

good good - look forward to it!

Whose grandaughter are you - can you say?

NappyValley · 14/05/2007 14:27

I am Roberta's grand daughter.
There is a page with a photo of one of her letters. It is really amazing to recognise someone's handwriting in a book. It really brought back memories.

Have just read it although am not related to any CCC members.

Women are so good at supporting each other although I noted their language was not as colourful as MN is sometimes.

I rather like the idea of a magazine written by other women arriving in the post.

Genidef · 16/05/2007 20:46

I was horrified at how Isis was treated by the people around her - basically like a sick child both by that doctor and her husband. And the way he reacted when she told him that she was pregnant with her last child!!!!

NappyValley · 17/05/2007 10:11

I am with you there Genidef. I was appaulled. you would think having made previous kids he would know how it works!!! I do find it amazing how calmly they seem to want and expect to have so many children. My mum was 1 of 4 and my dad was 1 of 6. Seems fairly normal for the 40s/50s. Nowadays we often have to wonder if we should have more than 2 mainly for financial reasons, but I guess also we are starting families later in life.

I am off on holiday for a week and want to finish the book while there.

nappyvalley you should be proud of your grandmother, it's one of the story I remember the most.
I wish I could know the insides of my grandparents lives in the same way. When I started being interested in them as persons rather than just grandparents it was a bit too late.

great book!!

fishie · 17/05/2007 11:10

ooh this looks really good, i've just ordered it from library.

NappyValley · 17/05/2007 21:29

Fishie it really is a well put together book. I just read today that they are doing a reprint of it already which is great.

If you love real life stories then this collection is great. They write so presonally (a la Mumsnet) that you really feel you are peering into their lives and should apologise for peeking.

Genidef not sure if you are still watching this thread, but have finished reading Isis story this weekend and it made me so sad and so angry at the same time.

All that painful electro shock therapy appauls me. All she needed was some counselling and someone to really HEAR her.

thank goodness times change.
