Who still reads children's books?

Does anyone ever re-read their childhood favourites? I won't part with my full set of Chalet School books or my Narnia books and have re-read both as an adult. I also still have most of the Lorna Hill ballet stories (lent a couple to a niece who lost them). Also kept the Jinny/Shantih horse stories until another niece borrowed them (must get those back!). DH thinks I'm mad to read them as an adult - he wouldn't even read Harry Potter. Assure me I'm not alone!!

I'm re-reading lots of DDs now as I re-buy them() for her - loved the Swish of the Curtain, am currently on the Magic Wishing Tree, and will shortly be starting the St Clares boxed set that I bought for her the other day from the Book People. You're definitely not alone.

JackieNo · 27/04/2007 16:10

Whoops - Magic Faraway Tree I mean.

mummydoit, you need to read this thread As Jackie says, you are definitely not alone

mummydoit · 27/04/2007 16:20

I missed that thread! Off to read it now.

I still read Chalet School books, plus Narnia, Mark Twain, just read The Wolves of Willoughby Chase for the 1st time.

mummydoit · 27/04/2007 19:39

Did you know that there are quite a few new Chalet School books, written by fans in the style of Elinor Brent-Dyer. The ones I've read have been good, apart from 'The Chalet Girls Grow Up' which has all sorts of horrible things happening to Joey, Mary Lou and the rest. Really weird!

I still collect chalet school books.CGGU was weird ,like fan fiction but someone actually published it

IdrisTheDragon · 27/04/2007 20:03

You are not alone .

You don't have a full set of h/b CS books do you? .

MrsWho · 27/04/2007 20:30

I don't I did sell some of mine when as I need the money but only once I had the GGB edition.

bumperlicious · 27/04/2007 20:33

I keep rereading the Drina ballerina stories. And a like to read Sweet valley high books when I can get my hands on them

mummydoit · 29/04/2007 19:04

I have two hardback CS books. The rest are paperback. Would love to get my hands on some hardbacks as, apparently, there are bits edited out in the paperbacks.

I have 37 of the 68 CS books now. Mostly paperback. Can't afford any more because the ones I haven't got go for astronomical prices on Ebay. I did manage to find the last couple of Drina books in a secondhand shop for 50p or so a couple of years back - they go for upwards of £30 on Ebay.

singingmum · 30/04/2007 11:25

I still have and re-read my Enid Blyton books and also am re-reading Harry Potter so that I'm reminded of story for the next book

VictorVictoria · 30/04/2007 11:26

I have a full et of Chalet School hardbacks. It has taken me 30 years to complete......(started when I was 8!)

elkiedee · 30/04/2007 11:28

I would like to read them more but I have quite a lot of my old kids' books, and if I see ones that seem to have gone missing in charity shops, I buy them too. I also have old favourites whose new work I still buy - Diana Wynne Jones - there were others like Joan Aiken but she died a couple of years ago.

elkiedee · 30/04/2007 11:30

I have a lot of the Drina books too, I didn't realise they were priced so high on ebay. Have you tried abebooks.com where secondhand booksellers list? Sometimes things go for a more realistic value on the ordinary secondhand market than if there's a bidding war affected by sentimentality.

Manictigger · 30/04/2007 15:24

I still mourn (well slightly regret) the fact that I never got to read all the Trebizan school books by Anne Digby and still don't know what happened to Tish, Sue etc and did Rebecca ever win Wimbledon!!!??? Please anyone?!

percypig · 30/04/2007 15:27

A lot of my own childhood books are still at my mum's being read by my wee sisters - including my complete (but mostly paperback) set of Chalet School. I do still read children's books though, and get paid for doing so - am a part time English teacher!

RosaLuxembourg · 30/04/2007 15:56

I have some of them but not all - will check and let you know! I have a funny feeling they sort of trailed off without tying up all the loose ends though.

squarehead · 29/05/2007 22:56

I'm thoroughly enjoying reading books aloud to my girls (4 and 6) now that they like longer, more interesting books. I think I enjoy our bedtime stories as much as they do. Spend a good couple of hours reading sometimes, and none of us want to stop. The latest one we loved was "The Bullerby Children" by Astrid Lindgren. Unfortunately it was not my copy. If anyone has a copy of that they want to sell, let me know!
I'm a bit of a book fanatic anyway. I love certain kids books just for the illustrations, like the Medici Society ones.

paulaplumpbottom · 29/05/2007 22:57

I ma reading the Little House books to my dd at the moment and its been wonderful

Twinklemegan · 29/05/2007 22:57

at all of you with a complete set of CS books. I can't afford to complete my set now.

PersephonePlease · 29/05/2007 22:58

OOhh was just going to mention Trebizon books!

I had the full set and want to re-read them but need to check if my sister still has them.

They were great. Am excited about getting into Enid Blyton with my boys as well.

I re-read all the Little House books a couple of months ago. They were excellent.

I'm happy to read any quality children's books. I'm really enjoying Garth Nix's Keys of the Kingdom series. Also Sabriel/Lirael/Abhorsen. I loved Malorie Blackman's Knot's & Crosses trilogy.
