It's my birthday today, having a rather crappy day so I thought I'd treat myself to some new books but I don't know what to get! Any suggestions? I can't cope with depressing reads atm and I don't do chick lit

I loved The Book Thief but it may be too depressing for you.

Anything by Terry Pratchett would always be on my recommendation list.

fryalot · 27/04/2007 14:55

happy birthday, btw

mummydoit · 27/04/2007 15:43

Just fiction or do you like factual books too? I've just read the Book of General Ignorance and couldn't put it down. Some really fascinating stuff in there. Oh, and Happy Birthday.

fryalot · 27/04/2007 15:43

oh, I loved that too. Tis very good. And Jeremy Clarkson "you got soul" that was good too.

nappyaddict · 27/04/2007 15:54

happy birthday. i like fairly typical girly books so not sure any of these will be your thing, but i have recently read and enjoyed:

high society by sarah mason
handbags and gladrags by maggie alderson
the playground mafia by sarah tucker
the devil wears prada by lauren weisberger
hubble bubble by christina jones
my best friend's girl by dorothy koomson
watermelon by marian keyes
the rise and fall of a yummy mummy by polly williams

am currently reading a book called nice girls do which is proving to be very unputdownable!

mummydoit · 27/04/2007 19:40

'You got soul' is a good choice. In fact, I would recommend any of Jeremy Clarkson's books.

elkiedee · 27/04/2007 19:46

Can you name anything you've really enjoyed recently to give us some idea?

nickytwotimes · 27/04/2007 19:49

i've just re read "the remains of the day" for the billionth time - fantastic.

LazyLineThreadKiller · 27/04/2007 19:56

Have recently read and enjoyed What was lost by Catherine O'Flynn. Also Brave New World.

LazyLineThreadKiller · 27/04/2007 19:56

Yeah...just read your OP re:depressing reads....stay away from Brave New World.

choosyfloosy · 27/04/2007 19:58

In A Good Light by Clare Chambers. Not chick lit - the lighter side of excellent.

Any clues to your likes?

DaisyMOO · 27/04/2007 20:21

Thanks for all your suggestions, I will have a look at them. I probably should have said what books I've really enjoyed

Probably my most recent favourite was The Time Traveller's Wife. Also enjoyed all the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency books, Restless, Interpretation of Murder, Behind the Scenes at the Museum. I also really liked The Secret History and Suit Francaise but I need something a bit lighter at the moment

Dasiymoo - some of the stuff you like are my faves too. I recently read Yellow Half of the Sun & Purple Hibiscus - OK, both are a bit heavy, so maybe leave them for the mo, but they're worth reading down the line.

hewlettsdaughter · 27/04/2007 20:26

Zadie Smith's On Beauty? I bought that and The Time Traveller's Wife and Suite Francaise on a 3 for 2 recently...

hewlettsdaughter · 27/04/2007 20:33

Happy birthday btw

elkiedee · 27/04/2007 22:03

Kate Atkinson's Case Histories, most recent pb by the author of Behind the Scenes, is a good read, there's some dark stuff but I don't think it's too heavy, and I see you like books which have an element of crime fiction in.

elkiedee · 27/04/2007 22:07

Have you read any Sarah Waters books? I find they have that balance of good read but with a bit more substance to them. Not altogther light but far from being depressing.
