My DS1 is currently being asessed for Asperger's syndrome. I've been looking around for some useful books, but there are so many on Amazon, I don't know where to start. Can anybody recommend any good ones?

Go for Tony Atwoods to start with.

REIDmylips · 26/04/2007 19:53

i teach a young boy with Aspergers and read 'the curious incident...' i would certainly recommend it!

As loopymumsy said, it really does give you a great insigt into how it must feel. It certainly helped regarding my teaching!

There is a boy who is probably now about 16/17 but he has been writing since he was about 13/14 about his experince of Aspergers. His books are excellent because he really tells it as it is for him and what everyday life is like. I cant remember his name but it is right on the tip of my tongue!!! Let me google and see. I dont know how old your DS is, but they will be great for when he is older to read for himself, as there boy who wrote them really wrote them for other people with Aspergers.

Luke Jackson!! Freaks, geeks and aspergers is excellent.
The Curious incident is also very good, but it made me cry!!!

gess · 26/04/2007 20:02

here's the one I mean It's a good basic introduction and reference. He's probably the most authorative on AS. A curious incident is an interesting read, but may or may not remind you of your son. Luke's book is very good for teens, but for reference, and all you need to know to start with go for Tony Attwood's.

misdee · 26/04/2007 20:04

curious incident is good, freaks geeks as well.

MrsWho · 26/04/2007 20:27

Both are great books but think I' go with Freeks, Geeks first.

Think there is few books by Luke and his Mum Jacqui

Martian in the Playground by Clare Sainsbury.

gess · 26/04/2007 20:35

I was going to mention martian in the playground as well. Excellent for school aged children.

gigglinggoblin · 26/04/2007 20:37

i read martian in the playground when aspergers was first suggested for my ds. there are lots of little tales from lots of people with as and most clicked as similar to ds, i found it really useful as it explained a lot of behaviour i had not even thought would be connected. curious incident was a good read, but not very close to my ds. i didnt know where to start on amazon either so went to the library, i was pleasantly surprised they had quite a few books

I new you guys could come up with something! Thanks! I did read "The Curious Incident Of The Dog....." ,last year, and thought it was brilliant. There seem to be a few Tony Atwoods books. Which one should I go for? I think I've almost got my head around what it's like to be DS, and I'm now looking for stratagies to help him cope with transitions, etc.

laurie leventhal-belfer - aspergers syndrome in young children - i just borrowed this from a nas course and it's really good if your child is pre-school (mine is 5 so good as) and has lots of strategies for transition

gess · 26/04/2007 21:26

The Attwood book I linked to below is the starting point CF, start with that one then addd any that take your fancy. He's the AS authority really.

"Understanding Autism for Dummies" may be a useful read. Chapter 5 talks about Asperger's syndrome. This could be a useful introduction to understanding more about Autistic Spectrum Disorders in general.

I have just discovered Torey Hayden's books. They are an account of a teacher working with special needs children, so cover a variety of subject areas. I am currently reading "Somebody Else's Kids" which has recently been published in the UK, and can be found in certain supermarkets at the moment. While not being AS specific, books like this may be useful to give some insight into children with special needs.

Personally I didn't think much of the Curious Incident book. Everyone has their own opinion on books!

Whizzz · 27/04/2007 15:41

The Luke Jackson book is great for older kids 10 - 15 ish. I support an Aspergers lad in secondary school & found was full of useful stuff. The Curious Incident is also a good read in a more general way

christie1 · 28/04/2007 20:49

try Asbergers Huh?, its written from a child's perspective but I found it amazing in helping an adult understand it. Curious incident was great too. Here is the link www.amazon.com/Aspergers-Childs-Perspective-Rosina-Schnurr/dp/customer-reviews/0968447309
