2018 reading goals and challenges

Fabianthefabulous · 29/12/2017 09:44

My reading/book goals for 2018 are:

  • to read 26 books (I have read 34 books this year but I want to read some longer books in 2018)
  • spend less time on mumsnet. I want to read books instead of wasting so much time on AIBU Smile
  • and not buy any books! The past year has been one long book buying binge, I have been buying books quicker then I can read them, I need to pause and catch up. I easily have enough real and Kindle books to keep me going for a year and I will still use the library.

Anyone else have any goals for the year or any challenges they will be following?

I think my wish list is going to get very long, I have already added a few from reading the 'best books of 2017' and 'important books' threads Blush

I’m aiming for around 75 next year. Managed 72 this year. No more buying books too I have more than a years supply and I have whittled down my amazon wish list this year by borrowing as many as I could from the library. Going to have a break from there too...hopefully. Good intentions Grin

Aiming for 50 new books

KatyaZamolodchikova · 29/12/2017 11:07

I aimed to read 50 books in 2017 and ended up on around 25, so am going to set a 30 book challenge for 2018 which may be a bit more realistic.

I already have three on my list to read in the next month or so, and loads in the house that I want to read, as well as on my kindle, and a £25 Waterstones voucher to use.

PrincessoftheSea · 29/12/2017 13:52

My goal is 25 books. 2017 was a terrible year for reading for me. Really could not find any books I really liked and could get into for the whole year. I really need to find a good book to find my love of reading againSad

RainOnATinRoof · 29/12/2017 14:22

I'm going to aim for 50, with the expectation that I will probably achieve 40. Looking at my "to read" list, I have a lot of long books on there.

MadamePince · 29/12/2017 14:28

I managed 75 in 2017, and I'll aim for about the same in 2018.
My aim will be to write a proper review of each one, I have a lovely journal to write them in

Tessliketrees · 29/12/2017 16:55

I set a reading goal on Goodreads but only hit 78 (will be 79).

I honestly don't see how I can do more, it's a bloody nightmare finding stuff to read.

lostleonardo · 29/12/2017 17:16

I'm aiming for 40 excluding what I read to my DC. I've just started Sarum by Edward Rutherford. If I get a big saga out of the way now then I might chose a couple of quicker reads for January to get me on my way!

LadyLapsang · 30/12/2017 10:54

I don't have a number in mind and don't know how many I read this year (or any year for that matter). Aiming to raise the quality. Just started Ali Smith's "Autumn" and have been dipping into Jeanette Winterson's "Christmas Days" over the holiday.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 30/12/2017 10:56

Not a number in time but I do have some larger books I would like to read, again less time on MN and more time reading and trying to not buy any books as I have huge piles to read. I did manage to read The Goldfinch on holiday which I loved and got stuck into A Prayer for Owen Meany which I am also enjoying but glad I had decent time to get stuck in.

Woolfrai · 30/12/2017 10:58

I am aiming for just 15 (excluding university course material). I work full time and study at university part time, so don't get as much leisure reading time as I would like. It will be hard prioritising which 15 books I would like to read.

bootygirl · 30/12/2017 12:35

I am aiming for 50 read about 40-45 this year. Going to 'try' to not buy any books. Have loads on kindle, some in house and few on hold in library.
I will be off work after major surgery next year so have a good few in my audible account...
Going to try to do some reviews... might join the 50 book thread.

bootygirl · 30/12/2017 12:44

Anyone doing a challenge? I.e. X no of non fiction, all books by author, or classics?
Looking for inspiration 😊📚📚📚

TeaAndToast85 · 30/12/2017 12:53

I'm aiming for an unambitious 25. I have practically stopped reading for pleasure entirely in the past 2 years, and that upsets me because it's one of my favourite things. I'm starting with the Book of Dust Grin

AdaColeman · 30/12/2017 13:04

I'm thinking of reading all of the novels by Charles Dickens, probably in written chronological order. Some will be re reads for me, but others, such as The Old Curiosity Shop will be new.
It's about fifty books, so should be achievable for me in a year.

kimlo · 30/12/2017 15:06

this year I aimed for 35. If I can finish one before tomorrow night, I will have read 52.

I think I'll aim for 40 next year.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 30/12/2017 15:07

My target was 30 this year and I am in the last 20% of my last 2017 read.

Next year I have two modules plus associated essays and my MA dissertation so I am setting a target of 10. I would also like to read a few longer books this year and at least a couple will be relevant to study so will take some concentration.

I am going to spend less time faffing about on my phone.

ChessieFL · 30/12/2017 15:57

I am going to do the Popsugar reading challenge. I am also challenging myself not to buy any more books until I have read all the unread books around my house. Mind you I had the same challenge last year and I think I got to April before temptation got the better of me!

whatsittoyou · 30/12/2017 19:35

I was going to try the 50 book challenge, but realistically I’m no sure how many I will read - I like to aim high! 😁
In the past 5 years I’ve got married and had 3 babies so I’ve been a bit preoccupied! Going to focus on getting my love of reading back this year and set myself a little challenge. Either way at least I can log it and set a target to beat next year! I like the idea of doing a review of them in a lovely journal (off to buy one online)

diamantegal · 30/12/2017 19:50

I want to do one of the challenges but not sure which. I read plenty, but generally not great quality - just grabbing thrillers from the library etc. - so would rather be challenged to read better instead of more.

Anyone found any good challenges? I'm contemplating popsugar or the vipers Goodreads one. Otherwise I may work my way through my "1001 books to read before you die" - plenty of inspiration there!

southeastdweller · 30/12/2017 23:37

I've read 55 books this year and want to get up to 60 in 2018, which I think will be easy if I spend less time browsing online on my phone. I read 65+ books in 2014 and 2015 and wasn't any busier than what I've been this year!

I'm increasingly disappointed by the recently published books I read so will be challenging myself to read two modern classics a month next year. I also feel there's so many famous books I haven't read and want to so tomorrow I'm going to look through the lists on here for some inspiration.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 31/12/2017 08:07

Southeast I have been finding that recently so have been going for more classics which I have been enjoying. Currently reading Old Filth.

There are a few books I would like this year as I am reading two series so I think I will not buy until I have read three books. I really want to read these ones so that is a good incentive to get reading

stilllovingmysleep · 31/12/2017 08:15

I'm aiming for at least 50 books this year (and participate properly in that thread here on MN) and I'm going to be doing the Modern Mrs Darcy challenge too which sounds like fun.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 31/12/2017 08:45

That looks interesting
