What can I read in 2018?

Just that really. I read a lot and have pretty much run out of ideas ...

I like contemporary fiction, some fantasy / horror (although I have no patience with poorly written potboilers), some thrillers (as long as not full of stereotypes), will read young adult (as always looking for recommendations for younger members of the family). Hate autobiography / biogs, and romance / family saga type things.

Last thing I read was 'A little life' which I enjoyed but thought was over-long and a bit flawed. Before that I read the 'Lie Tree' - young adult. And before than some Scandi crime (Karin Fossum) which was OK but v predictable ...

Please help - I have Xmas book tokens I am itching to spend

I just finished the linked book. It was fantastic.

I just read Sarah Waters Fingersmith which was an awesome epic tale. Victorian horror but modern writing style - completely blew me away

Station Eleven is a good YA dystopian type novel.

Michael Faber is very good.

Why not listen to the Radio 4 podcast of A Good Read? I find it quite good discovering new (to me) things.

My suggestion for a good read is Sweetland by Michael Crummey. I read it a couple of years ago and it still stands out for me.

YA - have you read The Hate U Give? If not, I'd definitely recommend.

IME The Lie Tree is one of the weaker of Frances Hardinge's books. Fly By Night + sequel Twilight Robbery or A Face Like Glass are far stranger and more interesting.

Thanks very much everyone - lots of ideas so far. Have read Fingersmith and agree it is very good - well plotted with lots of twists ..

Like the idea of listening to R4 podcast - used to listen to R4 all the time (pre-children) but its one of the things that I seem to have lost out on along the way ...
