Hi, as the title says really! DS 20, has really enjoyed the Roy Grace books, so I'd like to buy him something along those lines. Possibly with more of a courtroom feel as he loves that sort of thing, and preferably set in the UK. Thanks.

I've read the Roy Grace series.
Ian Rankin's Rebus books are among the best in that genre.
Also similar writer is Graham Hurley (based in Portsmouth).

They won't fulfil the courtroom bit, but I've really enjoyed the Simon Fenchurch series by Ed James. They are all based in central London, and like Grace he is a copper with a mystery in his private life.
Another detective series which is made more interesting by the intricacies of the characters' personal lives is of course Stuart MacBride's Logan MacRae series, which have a lot of humour to them too.

How about Mark Billingham's Tom Thorne series?

BlackPeppercorn · 20/12/2017 14:55

Of course I forgot Mo Haider's Jack Caffery series, all based in London. The first one, Birdman, was featured the housing estate which was built on my school site. It's right scary.
The Romney and Marsh Files series by Oliver Tidy (only on Kindle) are based around Dover and that area. Whilst not the most complex novels, they are quite interesting plots.

Thanks for the replies. Forgot to say, he's read Mark Billingham.

Also, I know you said UK, but has he read any of the Bosch series by Michael Connelly?

Val McDermid is good. I like Elly Griffiths Norfolk series too.

NoWayInn · 21/12/2017 10:10

If he likes Mark Bellingham and Peter James then he might prefer something more gruesome gritty. Peter Robinson and Ellie Griffiths are very gentle crime.
I love Stuart McBride's writing, witty and great characters but sadly too gory for me.
Also maybe Stephen Leather's Spider Shepherd series. DS(19) likes those.

Thanks everyone.

Lj Ross series, set in Northumbria is very good.

Luke Delaney is very good. His books are very authentic, as he's worked at the Metropolitan police in the CID murder squad.

Quintin Jardine's Bob Skinner series. Like Roy Grace a senior policemen.

Ann Cleeves has a few good series set in the North East and the Shetland ones. Also the Peter May Hebrides ones.
