What Kindle do you have?

Do share.

And, do you still buy ‘normal’ books?

I bought the voyage recently to replace my paper white. I like having the page turning buttons back. I wanted an oasis but couldn’t justify the price. I still buy books if they’re cheaper but being able to read without putting the light on is so handy. Also has meant that I’m not filling my bookcases more.

leftwiththedognow · 17/12/2017 18:48

Paperwhite and I LOVE it. I take it everywhere with me.

I always swore I wouldn't get one as I love my huge collection of 'real books' but hubby hates having a lamp on.
When I dropped my first one in the bath ( Sad ) I realised how essential it is to me and counted the days until my new one turned up!

Not bought a paper book since but have bought many of my fave titles.

SatsukiKusakabe · 17/12/2017 18:48

I have a Paperwhite - upgraded last year from old keyboard style so have had a Kindle for the last nearly 7 years.

Yes, I still buy normal books, and borrow regularly from the library. I read more since having the Kindle, as I’m never without a book in otherwise dead time, and as the Paperwhite has a built in light I can read in the dark sitting up with children or in hotels etc.

It hasn’t really replaced books, it’s just another way I come by them.

ScreamingValenta · 17/12/2017 18:50

It's a fairly basic one - not the Paperwhite. I would like one that lights up but can't really justify the purchase. I often buy normal books - I do prefer reading a paper book, but Kindle books are usually cheaper; they're available instantly if I'm bored and desperate to read something; and it's handy to stack my Kindle up with books before I go on holiday.

waycat · 18/12/2017 13:09

I don't have a Kindle par se, but I use the Kindle reading App on my Ipad.

I've looked at Kindles in PC World, and didn't realize how small the screens are compared to an Ipad, until I reminded myself that they are two distinctly different devices, and I guess Kindles are more akin to paperbacks in regards to size and reading area.

I do like my Kindle app a lot and have quite an extensive library, but the same can also be said for normal books. I buy a lot second hand, and have just bought four in a series by Jeff Abbott to complete my collection of that series.

There are a few choice authors who books I actually collect either in Kindle or paperback, but for many others and also one-offs I use my local library.

Nearlyadoctor · 18/12/2017 13:16

Paperwhite and I love it. I do still buy normal books especially if it's quite a complex story i.e. Wolf Hall so I can flick back and forwards to remind myself where certain characters fit in the story/ family tree.

Nan0second · 18/12/2017 13:18

Paper white. Love that I can read in the dark without an annoying torch.
Do get the odd book from the library.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 18/12/2017 13:20

Paperwhite. It's my third Kindle- I had an old keyboard one that died, replaced it with a newer model, then dropped it and damaged the display so I used my Nectar points and got the current one.

I still have hardback books bought me for birthdays and Christmas, and do read paperbacks, but the Kindle is fab because I have a long commute and recently have spent a lot of time with DH in hospital so it's handy to take the Kindle along.

whatsavings · 18/12/2017 13:47

Paperwhite. I love it & I am still staggered that I have 100's of books on such a tiny device. Fits in my smallest handbag & has filled hours of time in hospitals, hotels, etc.

I still buy books though, especially the packaged collections from The Works. I've just bought the complete set of Cassandra Clares & Terry Pratchetts Long Earth series for £12 each. Well, you've got to read in the bath, haven't you?

NotMeNoNo · 18/12/2017 13:53

Another Paperwhite user, recently upgraded from I think a 5th generation. I needed the back light for reading while I wait for DC to fall asleep which is 1-2 hours on a bad night. I haven't bought a paper book since apart from recipe books but even then if I have them on the app I can check a recipe on my phone at the shops. I was sceptical but it's helped me rediscover books as I am never near a library or bookshop.

cliffdiver · 18/12/2017 14:04

Paperwhite.

I love it. My most used and valued material possession.

I occasionally read paper books.

SatsukiKusakabe · 18/12/2017 14:20

Yes it’s different reading on a Kindle than on the app - it’s not backlit in the same way so feels easier on the eyes, much more akin to book type. I like the small pages, I find I read a lot quicker on a Kindle. And I can make the font nice and big so I can see it!

littletike · 18/12/2017 14:28

I have a Kindle fire and use the app on my phone... Problem with both is the glare when reading in the sun... Is the paperwhite good for this?

SatsukiKusakabe · 18/12/2017 14:32

Yes littletike the light adapts to different conditions and is different to a tablet light so you can read it outside without the same problems.

waycat · 19/12/2017 05:44

Hmm, after reading the last few posts it has got me thinking that maybe, if I continue to read Kindle books which is surely the way things will go in the future, then I should consider investing in a genuine Kindle rather than using my iPad add.

Certainly something to look into after Christmas.......

mirren3 · 19/12/2017 06:24

littletike I've got the fire too, I use the blue shade feature which helps with the glare, especially at night. It is activated from the settings screen.
I love my Kindle and hardly buy books now, I have Kindle unlimited and it is fab, there are great authors I would never have read without having it.

FlowerPotMum · 19/12/2017 06:44

I've got an old style one without the light. I genuinely love it. Sometimes I wish it was a paperwhite but I can't justify the price.
I still buy the occasional hard back and have a stash of favourite books under the bed ( tiny house, no space!).
Its one of my prized possessions, I take it everywhere and flit between 2/3 books at a time.

HelenaJustina · 19/12/2017 06:54

Paperwhite, I love it so much and couldn’t be without it now.

I don’t buy (many) new books for myself now at all. But can’t resist a charity shop pick up, book stall at a summer fete and still get given them as presents.

LoniceraJaponica · 19/12/2017 06:55

Fire for MN and web surfing. Paperwhite for reading. I love being able to read in the dark or in bright sunlight. The Fire is useless outside due to glare.

TrinityBelle · 19/12/2017 06:58

I've got an ancient one (that uses a keyboard) which is still going strong and great for reading in the sun without glare. I've also got a Kindle Fire tablet that I use to read on too but obviously that's useless in the sun. I don't read 'traditional' books anymore. I like the dictionary feature on the Kindle as I'm a bit thick. DH has a Kindle and hates it, he prefers a real book.

FairyPenguin · 19/12/2017 07:02

Upgraded from a keyboard Kindle to a Paperwhite (handed old one down to DD). Love it. Can read in bed without light disturbing DH, love being able to carry lots of books around and read what I fancy. Also holiday packing is much lighter.

I still buy books from charity shops and summer fetes, etc, and I still borrow books from the library. I like reading real books during the day at home (very rare!) but prefer Kindle for bedtime and travel.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 19/12/2017 07:12

Paperwhite. Do love it. Occasionally buy real books but tend to be non fiction.
I can see what people say about complicated books.

I have too many books though and I can't bear to through them away.

CoteDAzur · 19/12/2017 08:51

I don’t recommend the Oasis.

chatwoo · 19/12/2017 09:00

I have got one of the first touch screen versions. I don't love it but can't argue on convenience + speed of getting my hands on the lastest trashy crime novel!

MsAwesomeDragon · 19/12/2017 09:16

I've got a paperwhite. I had an older one for about 5 years and loved it, but dh bought me a paperwhite last Christmas (so I can read in bed without the light disturbing him) which is even better. I passed my old one on to my sister, and she's working her way through all the books I've read over the last 5 years.
