And by non-recent, I mean anything from around ten years ago or earlier.

I've been looking for some new books to read but I seem to have read pretty much all the new crime/thriller stuff Sad

Frederick Forsyth - more thriller than crime but really gripping books.

Elizabeth George (Inspector Lynley)

Have you tried any Josephine Tey or Margery Allingham?

They’re practically historical novels now, but really well written & plotted, with great characters.

LapdanceShoeshine · 06/12/2017 18:11

PD James? Or is she recent enough that you’ve read hers?

Geneslady · 06/12/2017 18:16

Tony and Susan or otherwise named Nocturnal Animals. Read it last year on holiday and couldn't put it down. Can't remember author.

mstrotwood · 06/12/2017 19:05

In a Lonely Place by Dorothy B. Hughes.
The Martin Beck series by Sjöwall and Wahlöö.

efeslight · 07/12/2017 17:11

Have you read Ruth Rendell, PD James? Older obvious ones like Agatha Christie or Ngaio Marsh ? Dorothy Simpson is from the 80s or 90s i think

OCSockOrphanage · 09/12/2017 20:20

Val McDermid may be stating the obvious. There is lots; it's a particularly lively arena at the moment.

OCSockOrphanage · 09/12/2017 20:22

Minette Walters. Lesley Grant-Adamson. MIchael Dibdin. Sara Paretsky.

Feelingfeduptonight · 09/12/2017 20:49

Can't beat Barbara vine.

sisterofmercy · 09/12/2017 21:00

I take it you've read the Ian Rankin novels about Inspector Rebus?

If you want something stranger then John Connolly's Charlie Parker novels are very well written.

RiojaHaze · 09/12/2017 21:19

Have you read Stuart MacBride? He's quite new but brilliant.

Older, Michael connelly?

Polista · 09/12/2017 21:22

Phil Rickman - amazing

Tiddlywinks63 · 09/12/2017 21:23

Peter Robinson
Peter May
Lee Child
de Mille
All very good.

BabloHoney · 09/12/2017 21:24

The Thomas Harris - Hannibal Lecter books are brilliant. Better than the films in my opinion.

LunasSpectreSpecs · 09/12/2017 21:24

Recently read The Seamstress by Maria Duenas - very enjoyable. Fashion, glamour, spies and set in the 30s/40s. Strong female characters too.

YesThisIsMe · 09/12/2017 21:26

Silence of the Lambs and The Day Of The Jackal are the best thrillers I’ve ever read (though to be fair I’m not a huge thriller fan).

In terms of fluffy funny crime stories Sarah Caudwell’s four novels set around a chamber of scatty barristers are underappreciated gems.

fleshmarketclose · 09/12/2017 21:30

Reginald Hill,
Ian Rankin,
Peter Robinson,
Quite recent but have you tried Denzil Meyrick and Ben Cheetham?

RiojaHaze · 09/12/2017 21:32

Fleshmarketclose....whose book are you named after? That's a rankin isn't it?

fleshmarketclose · 09/12/2017 21:39

Yes I'm an avid reader and love Rankin Grin
OP I'm currently reading Damien Boyd and enjoying them or what about Ann Cleeves?

lljkk · 09/12/2017 21:41

Mirage is very good (thriller).

NC4now · 09/12/2017 21:43

I’d forgotten about Minette Walters. I loved her books in the 90s.

Gemini69 · 09/12/2017 21:44

fantastic thread Grin

thank you

QueQueQue · 09/12/2017 21:57

Patricia Cornwall or Kathy Reich for forensic novels?
The alphabet series by Sue Grafton about a PI

Clawdy · 10/12/2017 09:52

Celia Fremlin. "The Hours Before Dawn" has just been re-published in a vintage edition. All about a new mother struggling with a baby who won't sleep, and strange things happening......it's a compulsive read, and written many years ago.

ChampagneCommunist · 10/12/2017 10:20

No-one beats Dorothy L Sayers, in my opinion. She is the Queen of Golden Age detective fiction
