Has anyone else read this? Advice needed!

I'm about 90 pages into it and find myself irritated by the stories within the story. I've skipped over the last two...but will skipping over them affect my understanding of the actual story in any way?

I hated it. I would skip the whole thing!

BigPinkOrchid · 19/11/2017 21:04

Haha, reallly? Grin

Although, that said, it's the first book in a while that I haven't been taking myself off to bed super early to read every night...so maybe I should skip it...

I gave up about 40% of the way though. Didn’t much like the characters; the structure was annoying and the main story just draaaaaaged.

RMC123 · 19/11/2017 21:12

Really! Only finished it because it was for Book Club.

LouiseBrooks · 19/11/2017 21:13

We read it for our book group and we all loved it.

However, I would say if you aren't interested enough in reading the stories within the main story, there's no point in bothering because it won't all make sense.

StripySocksAndDocs · 19/11/2017 21:18

Yes dont bother. Only finished here due to it was bookclub. Universally disliked by all members.

Yes it's a debut novel but it's very much like a creative writing competition winning entry.

For a decent debut try Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman.

BigPinkOrchid · 19/11/2017 21:42

Oh no...I had high hopes for it... Will give it a few more days, before (maybe) writing it off completely.

Thanks for the Gail Honeyman recommendation StripySocks, will add that one to my list.

I also persevered for a book club but hated every second. The others seemed to enjoy it. I think I read very different books from the others.

Murine · 20/11/2017 06:48

Uh oh this is my next book club read! Grin

NancyJoan · 20/11/2017 06:50

It’s rubbish, absolute dross. But you need to read the stories.

NancyJoan · 20/11/2017 06:51

I had high hopes for it

I did too, it’s such a good idea, but so so poorly executed.

shhhfastasleep · 20/11/2017 06:54

Currently reading The Girlfriend on recommendation. It’s so much worse.

OooohHorlicks · 20/11/2017 06:56

Agree you must read the little stories.

That said I tried really hard a number of times and I was so bored that it actually stopped me reading anything for a couple of weeks!!

BigPinkOrchid · 20/11/2017 08:30

Hm, might just leave it then. Certainly don't want to go back and re-read the little stories I missed, and it's definitely slowing down my reading...like you Horlicks, it's currently putting me off reading at all!

I haven't minded the main story so far (well, maybe the Eunice one isn't that great) but I find the little stories so jarring.

Right, next! Grin

I enjoyed it.

Eleanor Olipahant is a bit of a Rosie Project / Man Called Ove rip off imho!!

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 20/11/2017 13:49

Oh noooo, I just bought this! Grin

BigPinkOrchid · 20/11/2017 15:56

I've abandoned it. Started The Underground Railroad. Read more of that so far today than I read of The Keeper of Lost Things in a week...confirming it wasn't me being a lazy reader, but the book not being for me!

Hope you enjoy it Fluffy! Grin

The Underground Railroad is very different to Keeper of Lost Things.

It's a very good read.

NancyJoan · 20/11/2017 16:50

Ooh, I've got that in my pile.

BigPinkOrchid · 20/11/2017 19:07

Agree so far Stripy, I really like it.

Read it next Nancy! Smile

The Underground Railroad is a vastly superior book. No comparison. Isn’t it a great feeling when you get your reading mo jo back?

BigPinkOrchid · 21/11/2017 08:19

It really is RMC. I very seriously lost mine for several years, only got it back about 3 months ago and feel like a kid in a toy shop at the moment with all the books I need to catch up on. Grin

Late night last night due to The Underground Railroad...and it's hardly bedtime reading...
