Any other Constant Readers here?

I’m a massive Stephen King... just wondered if there were any more here, and what you’re reading?

I’m currently reading Finders Keepers (second in the Bill Hodges trilogy; follow up to Mr Mercedes).

It’s not his usual style, and I enjoyed his epics ie It, The Stand and Under the Dome more, but they’re fun and easy to read.

Huge fan here. Salems Lot is my favourite, i have read it tens of times.

I tend to like his "shit goes wrong in small town" story arc, so I like NT, SL, Tommyknockers, UTD etc. But i love it all. I think i have read everything he has published in book form.

modifiedmummy13 · 16/11/2017 16:51

@lessthanBeau I really enjoyed Rose Madder too. 🥀

@HTKB I gravitate towards the small town ones too. 😀

DH and I are both big fans. I recon The Stand and IT are my favourite.

Not seen the IT film yet due to the pain in the arse of organising childcare for a cinema trip but we will watch it once we can rent it.

IheartCaptainHolt · 16/11/2017 17:07

Wizards and Glass is DHs favourite

Willow2017 · 16/11/2017 18:04

The stand is one of my fav books ever. And i loved the tv version.
I remenber reading till 3am on a school night to finish It😀
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is a great read very understated.

I love his books on writing too even though i dont write (i wish i was good enough)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/11/2017 18:08

Loved the new It film. Not seen the other one.

Venell Please DM me about your tattoo! I'm considering my second - just waiting for the design and some courage!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/11/2017 18:08

Another huge fan from the age of 13. First one I read was Pet Semetary, reread it last year and it affected me much, much more now I'm a parent. Would say 100% my favourite. The Shining close second and do like a lot of his older stuff even Needful Things Wink

The one I've never understood what all the fuss is about is The Stand. Like seriously, that ending was pants.

Just finished 11.22.63 last week, never got round to it as the subject of JFK wasn't appealing but ended up getting into the story, even if I did skim some of the history bits Grin

I've seen the IT movie and whilst I thought it was good, I would have preferred them to make it waayy scarier. My 10yo could watch that and not bother him. Did enjoy Gerald's Game that was on Netflix a month or so ago.

Cheesymonster · 16/11/2017 21:25

What do you all think about his short stories?

modifiedmummy13 · 16/11/2017 21:37

@Cheesymonster They have their place... for me I have to be in the right frame of mind! Good for holidays or longish car journeys.

On the whole though I prefer a big fat epic tale! 😀

I’ve found my people!

Lifelong SK fan. Especially love his short stories and novellas.

Looking forward to my annual Christmas Eve reading of The Breathing Method.

HTKB · 16/11/2017 22:10

Well thanks to this i have just done 160 pages of Salems Lot.

Remus, I am not mad keen on Rose Madder either (although obv much better than 95% of the rest of English Literature). I think of that as his "feverish, close, fantastical" arc which is my least favourite..... See also Liseys Story, Dreamcatcher, Desperation

Willow2017 · 16/11/2017 22:26

Oh i remember that Just i like his short stories and novellas. I like that sometimes they are quirky and not in your face horror often just people in normal circumstances that go wrong or something just implied but not seen in full view. I Especially like 'The body'.

venellopevonschweetz · 16/11/2017 22:45

Most of my books belonged to my mum, isn’t it weird how a lot of constant readers get into his books because of a parent?!!

The older ones have a lot of nostalgia for me, even though I hate cigarettes I do love the odd waft of the smell mixed with old paper when I’m reading them - reminds me of my mum Smile

I could never part with my collection and even though I do read on my iPad my SK books have to be proper books!!

I’m hoping DS will develop my love too, he’s just a bit young atm Hmm

OytheBumbler · 16/11/2017 22:55

Ooh my people!

I read all the classics years ago until I read the ‘tommyknockers’. I was sooo bored and disappointed with it that I stopped reading SK for years.

I got back into them recently (luckily he’s written many more) and I’m loving them again. Just finished Duma Key tonight and enjoyed that one.

venellopevonschweetz · 16/11/2017 23:20

Love Duma Key, never seems to get the credit though!!!

Strummerville · 16/11/2017 23:54

Oh my god, oh my god, this thread is for me - I've been on a massive SK jag for the last 18 months or so!

I read a few when I was in my early 20s but then not really again until last year, when I picked up The Gunslinger, determined to have a second shot at it after a previous failed attempt. Fucking LOVED it and hurled myself into the Dark Tower. Since then it has been SK or die chez Strummerville. I cleaned up on the famous novels I'd never read before (Carrie, The Shining, Misery, It) and now just reading anything that's left. I have just finished Hearts in Atlantis (really liked, was nice to see Ted Brautigan again, love all the linky bits between books) and started Desperation. I read The Regulators years ago and know they are related. I'm into it so far! Next up will be Duma Key!

HumphreyCobblers · 17/11/2017 13:20

I really like the beginning of Rose Madder. The detail about her life and escape I think is quite brilliant. It all goes wrong with the mystical element for me.

I only ever read the first bit of Pet Semetery too, I just can't bear the rest.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/11/2017 17:38

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you "Survivor Type" - one of the best short stories ever written.

HumphreyCobblers · 17/11/2017 18:16

It certainly is.

1408 absolutely terrified me too.

JustHereForThePooStories · 17/11/2017 18:19

Love Survivor Type, and think of it often.

Also, Beach World, Nona, and The Jaunt.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/11/2017 18:22

Totally agree re Rose Madder, Humphrey. And I detest Pet Semetery - it's like a bad Scooby Doo episode.
