Best Georgette Heyer

Just re-reading The Nonesuch - and waiting to borrow These Old Shades from my mum. Sometimes nothing else will do. I would love some bright sparks to do a series of Georgette Heyers on TV. If they did a series what would everyone like?
I would beg for........These Old Shades, Devil's Cub, A Civil Contract, The Nonesuch, The Talisman Ring, The Convenient Marriage, Faro's Daughter and Frederica.
What would anyone else choose?

Thanks, MrsH. Yes, I've read that one!

Redsrule · 14/11/2017 19:58

Love GH but The Convenient Marriage makes me feel very sad.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/11/2017 20:10

Just bought The Talisman Ring.

BroomstickOfLove · 14/11/2017 20:14

Venetia is my absolute favourite favourite, with lots of runners up.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/11/2017 20:17

Also bought Footsteps in the Dark. I think The Nonesuch might have been the first of hers I read, but can't remember anything about it.

AnnaNimmity · 14/11/2017 20:18

I re-read Faro's daughter on holiday recently. One of the best imo!

Also like Devil's cub and Regency Buck.

HumphreyCobblers · 14/11/2017 20:23

I like the Regency ones best. Friday's Child was my first and I fell deeply in love with George. I think I was about 13. Otherwise I adore The Grand Sophy, Frederica, Venetia, Regency Buck (Lord Worth is my adult crush, not sure what that says about me) but my absolute favourite is A Civil Contract. I read that one over and over.

HarrietVane99 · 14/11/2017 20:31

Frederica, Venetia, Devil's Cub, and many of the others mentioned here, and also The Tollgate. It's more a mystery than a romance, and has a great supporting cast.

Also An Infamous Army. Supposed to be one of the best accounts of the Battle of Waterloo.

Regency Buck is one of my least favourite. Worth is just too domineering for my taste.

Liz38 · 14/11/2017 20:40

Love them. Read then all over and over, they're the best when I'm tired and not able for working at reading. I especially love Powder and Patch and These Old Shades/Devil's Cub but I'll happily read any of them.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/11/2017 18:43

I absolutely hated Powder and Patch!

HoratiaDrelincourt · 15/11/2017 19:15

Is that the cross-dressing twins one? Yeah, not my favourite.

MyKingdomForBrie · 15/11/2017 19:16

Remus what?!? How?? Philip’s transformation.. when they were so scathing of him! I love it.

HoratiaDrelincourt · 15/11/2017 19:35

Oh, that one. Yawn. Forgettable.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/11/2017 19:36

It's not cross dressing twins - it's a man who's accused of being too dull and down to earth, so he gets sent off to Paris (iirc) to learn how to become a dandy and somehow becomes the whatever the male equivalent of a belle is of every ball, as well as a fencing champion and various other amazing things, whilst also retaining his heart of gold.
This was my review:
Utter nonsense. This felt like Heyer had whipped it out in a day by taking paragraphs from all her other novels and sticking them together, without any attempt at plot or characterisation. Pages and pages of it involved nothing more than the hero’s stockings, and most of the other pages were the heroine either crying or being stupid or doing both simultaneously. I hated it.

Bobbins43 · 15/11/2017 19:38

The Grand Sophy!

Bobbins43 · 15/11/2017 19:38

And Bath Tangle! And April Lady!

bluebump · 15/11/2017 19:42

Ive been picking them up at charity shops for years, I've got about 32 now Blush. I've still got loads of them to read, my favourites so far are Venetia and Frederica. I must get reading the rest.

FlaviaAlbia · 15/11/2017 20:36

I quite like the one with the cross dressing twins, I can't remember what it's called though. The heroine is brilliant.

I've been thinking and I think I'd put Fredrica and The Grand Sophy up with my favourites too.

KnittingPearl · 15/11/2017 23:15

The Masqueraders - love that one!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/11/2017 18:13

Now reading The Talisman Ring and thoroughly enjoying it thus far.

ThomasRichard · 16/11/2017 18:16

Ooo, hard one. My favourites are These Old Shades, Regency Buck and Arabella.

ThomasRichard · 16/11/2017 18:21

Definitely crushing on Worth, Alverstoke, Mr Beaumaris and Sor Richard Wyndham

mimiasovitch · 16/11/2017 19:00

I remember being absolutely obsessed with the dress on the cover of Arabella as a teenager. I recently bought a hair flower in grey, with lavender accents. My sister was all ‘Oh, half mourning’. I love that she understands!
