Historical fiction fan trying to read non-fiction

I love History and inhale well written historical fiction but feel from time to time I would like to read factual history books or biographies.
I tend to struggle though as I read fast and so times get bogged down in the detail trying to get to the storyline
Am I alone here? do any of you find a way of keeping both fiction and non-fiction going or have any books they recommend? I'm currently trying to read Antonua Frasers book about the Gunpowder Plot

Two words.....Alison Weir!

I'm currently reading Ron Chernow's Alexander Hamilton biography. It's huge but really well written (and it was the inspiration for Hamilton which I'm desperate to go and see!)

I absolutely loved Mary S. Lovell'so non fiction bio of The Mitford Girls. It covers fascinating era of history but reads like a novel as the sisters really come to life in her writing.

Seconding Alison Weir. Her histories are so well-researched and (most of the time) she writes without bias.

William Dalrymple!
