What Makes Me A Me? is a funny and thought-provoking look at what makes us us, from Ben Faulks (also known as Mr Bloom from CBeebies) and bestselling illustrator of You Can't Take an Elephant on the Bus, David Tazzyman. This celebration of being who we are is perfect for inquisitive little minds.

I have to agree with Summer and Hits. My 3 year old was fairly underwhelmed with the text but loved the illustrations. It was a very attractive book to look at but for 3-5 range, the text was abstract and trying too hard to explain what individuality is. Really enjoyed the chance to receive the book though and thanks again Mumsnet for the opportunity.

Greensmurf1 · 25/10/2017 21:02

I enjoyed reading "what makes me a me?" to DD who is almost 5. She enjoyed looking at the pictures and pointing out the kids that she liked the look of, tracing with her finger when there was a dotted line in the illustrations. Her one complaint was that there wasn't enough pink in the book.

BingBongBingBong · 27/10/2017 08:58

My 3 year old and just-turned 2 year old love this book! I’m not sure they 100% understand the ‘message’ as such yet, but they love the illustrations and they find it easy to follow. My 2yo in particular enjoys it a lot and asks me to read it a couple of times a day.

Sairelou · 27/10/2017 21:48

We have read this book a few times now at my 4 year old’s request.

I liked that it is in little short rhymes as it flows really well. We enjoyed making up actions to go with the words (waving our arms like a tree or roaring like a dinosaur!)

Like others above, I struggled to read the dark blue text on the black background, maybe this could be changed in future editions?

My 11 year old with ASD and learning difficulties is like other kids and has spent some time looking at the pictures then singing the theme to Mr Bloom's nursery! He's not yet been interested in reading it with me, though.

We received the book last week. My son Lewis loved it, it was very colourful and well illustrated. It had a lovely message and made me feel warm and fuzzy reading it with Lewis. Thank you for choosing us x

We received this in the post and I allowed my DS5 to open it. He excitedly opened the package, discarded the book and said “oohhh I can make something with this” (the cupboard packaging Grin
After rescuing the book I explained that we had received an exciting book that we could read together at bedtime!
When he was eventually in the reading zone we read together and he loved it! Got his attention from the start and prompted lots of questions from him!
Great thought provoking book which we have already read over and over!
Thank you- it’s great Smile

Thank you for choosing us for this book! My boys are 2,4 and 6, and this is our current favourite! We read it as soon as it arrived and many times since, and it’s such a lovely book that I don’t mind having to read it repeatedly. Easy to read rhyming pages, the story flows nicely. My 6 year old especially likes to talk about how he is and isn’t like certain things now. I did have to explain why the boy’s mum didn’t want him to be like Alfie Wilks though! 😂 Brilliant Book, highly recommend.

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 01/11/2017 19:44

My 5 yo dd was thrilled to receive this book. She liked the illustrations and understood it all. However I think that it could have gone deeper making more personal comparisons. This would have enabled leading questions on to my dd as to what makes her unique easier.

Many, many thanks to Mumsnet for our copy of this.

A bright and cheery picture book from Ben Faulks, he of CBeebies ‘Mr Bloom’ fame. Published by Bloomsbury Children’s Books, we take a light-hearted look at what makes us both different and unique, all seen through the eyes of an inquisitive 5-year old boy. David Tazzyman's colourful illustrations perfectly complement the text by Ben Faulks. The rhyming prose is well-thought out, warm, humorous and poignant. This is great for a class book - reading this out aloud in Key Stage 1 will provide the impetus for lively discussions, with additional suggestions from pupils as to how special we all are.

A wonderful book.

My youngest loved this book. Beautiful illustrations.

GruffaloPants · 03/11/2017 21:07

Thanks for this lovely book. It is well written (exceeded my expectations to be honest!), and the illustrations are great.

It's perfect for reading aloud and flows really well. The language is simple enough for DD1 (6yo) to read by herself too.

The only criticism would be that the text is not clear on the dark blue page or on the page where there are loads of tiny dots in the background. I would expect that anyone with dyslexia or visual impairment would really struggle.

lolapops1 · 05/11/2017 21:50

Well this is the first time in a while the kids have not been impressed by a book.
They did not want me to read it again.
No questions,no laughing.
Have to say I was not that impressed either.

dricasantini · 06/11/2017 20:33

A precious history about the differences between human beings, in which every human being is unique and special in the way he is and is born. At the end of the day everyone is equal and is not. This is the magic of life.
My son Theo was captivated by history, drawings, colors throughout the pages. His imagination went far away.
He's stuck with this book every day since it came in the mail. I think is already time for another book, lol.

Thank you for this book - I didn't think it had arrived thanks to Royal Mail misplacing it at the sorting office but we got it just before half term.

My DH loves to tell our DC that I love Mr Bloom so he's having a field day about it.

I've read it this evening with my DS, who is nearly 5, he's very inquisitive and asks a lot of questions about everything, I thought it would be a really good book to fire his imagination. I expect it's a book we will read and then tomorrow he'll be processing it and asking more questions. We did chat through the pictures as we read it, he particularly liked the tree page with the squirrels and the dog doing a wee.

There are a lot of jokes that could go over his head, but made me chuckle, I'm a particular fan of him not being like Alfie Wilks! I was a bit sad he wasn't more like Super Guy too though.

Like a previous poster said, I wasn't keen on the blue type on black page - not great for subdued bedtime lighting.

We've read it twice now, both times at my instigation, DS hasn't said that he does not want to read it but hasn't picked it up without being prompted either.

Annamadrigal · 08/11/2017 09:49

Lovely book with a really good message. DS (3.5) seemed to enjoy it and found the picture of the puppy having a wee hilarious! I think it'll be a book that'll last us a few years

FreshGarbage · 14/11/2017 14:00

My 3 yr old and 6 yr old did enjoy the book, especially the pictures.
I found the text/ poetry a little clunky, but my kids didn’t complain!
My 6 yr old really enjoyed the final page of question marks, and spotting the textures and patterns from the main illustrations.
Overall, it’s a nice book which we will read again.

Rigbyroo · 15/11/2017 20:54

We loved this book! Dd(5) and ds(3) loved the illustrations. It came at the right time as we are having a lot of discussions about what makes us unique. It was easy to read and the message was clear. A lovely book which we are going to buy as a Christmas present for cousins.

Lyn29 · 21/11/2017 18:06

My daughter really enjoyed this book, she loved the illustrations and kept pointing out funny pictures in the book- especially focusing on the boys dog, she thought the dog was hilarious!! I loved the cover of the book and thought the glittery letters were a really nice touch. I loved the way the story was told as a poem, it had a lot of flow but still telling a lovely story at the same time. Defiantly a book for boys and girls and think it could cover a wide age group. I really liked the message in the book but I'm not sure if it was lost on my daughter as she was too busy pointing out what the dog was doing all the time!!
Thank you for picking us- a great book and really stands out to look at!!

colleysmill · 27/11/2017 22:37

Interestingly my older ds (8) enjoyed this book more than my 3 yr old - he was much more engaged with the idea/concept of what makes people people (if that makes sense) and we did have some quite good conversations afterwards with him particularly around being individual (toom me by surprise a bit!)

Physically it is a beautiful book and holding it it has a lovely feel. The prose is engaging and the illustrations eye catching although we didn't struggle as much with the dark background as other posters have.

Ds 8 says he really likes this book and it's "pretty good" d's 3 was less impressed however he likes trains and farms when it comes to picking a story!!!

SorchaMumsnet · 29/11/2017 11:42

Thanks for all your feedback on What Makes Me a Me - it seems that the illustrations especially proved popular.
