Ladybird's Pirate Pete and Princess Polly's Potty are fun and friendly potty training books, to help children feel confident and comfortable using the potty. Find out more about the books.

What Ladybird say:

Potty training is a crucial stage of a child's life and at Ladybird, we use stories to unlock the magic in these everyday 'little big moments'. Children can choose to follow either Pirate Pete or Princess Polly, depending on their preference of character.

For years parents have praised the series for its gentle and fun adventure story which children can enjoy, relate to and interact with by pressing the "cheer" sound effect. After all, even pirates and princesses use the potty!

We ask all winners to share their thoughts on either Pirate Pete's or Princess Polly's Potty. Everyone who posts their detailed feedback by Monday 30 October will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 Love2shop voucher.

Having troubles with potty training my 2.5 year old. He constantly asks for the potty but won’t use it. Waits until bedtime and then lets go. We have worried about him holding himself for hours on end. So when I saw this book giveaway I was keen to give it ago. He absolutely love the book and the cheer button and he’s often looking at it while sitting on his potty but unfortunately he’s still not going. The book is great but I’m not sure my toddler is quite ready yet. Will leave it a few weeks and try again.

A great book for our potty training. The pictures are bold and colourful and the subject matter is dealt with in an engaging way. The cheer button is a brilliant idea but at the moment it is being pressed continually - not just when the deed has been done!

This book is perfect for my 2.5 year old boy, he has a potty trained older sister and a baby in nappies just like Pirate Pete so I was very impressed by that! It was serendipitous and definitely helps him identify with the book.

I wasn't a huge fan of having a "boy" pirates book and a "girl" princess book, especially because I think given the choice himself of the two my boy would choose the princess book. I'm glad the publishers are removing the boy / girl labels on the front.

The book itself was good, it's really helpful to have the potty training process outlined and encouraged and to see how it works. The pictures are effective and it really simplifies what happens. It's interesting seeing which potty & pants my boy chooses too! It's not very interactive though, besides the slightly random cheer button; we bought a different book "Lulu's Loo" for my daughter when she potty trained which is similarly gender specific but has flaps and is more tactile, and I do slightly prefer that one to this.

The cheer button is really irritating but my boy obviously loves it (and we kept the tag to keep it quiet half stuck on so we can reinsert it just in case). Like a previous poster, potty training is on hold this month due to my family sharing a rather disgusting sick bug, but he's quite a reserved boy and hopefully having this book will give him more time to process the notion of potty training.

I do like this book, DS does keep coming back to it, leafing through it and pressing the cheer button (I'll random hear the cheer while I'm busy in the kitchen and know he's looking through it again!) so I think he enjoys it! Thank you very much for sending it to me. I would recommend it.

Thank you for the book. My toddler loves it. She enjoys flicking through the pages and turning the button. I'm going to wait until she's a bit older (now 24m) as I had so much trouble with my eldest daughter who I potty trained at 30months. Hopefully by reading this book together my youngest can get an idea on what to do and expect.

My daughter really enjoys pressing the button & joining in with the “yaaaay!”
It’s useful that the book normalises using the potty, although I’m not sure whether it has helped her progress more than just her natural curiousity.
I’d really like to see a more gender neutral version of the book, not only to avoid stereotyping, but it would also be useful for families with both male & female children.
Overall, a fun book and another way to make using the potty relatable 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

This book is amazing and having been quite sceptical initially I am so impressed. My son was beginning to show an interest in the potty but after 3 days with this book he is now loving using his potty. The book is really well written and talks about aspects like accidents and hygiene. The illustrations are bright and colourful. My son loves pressing the "cheering" sound button but now that my husband likes the button too, it is becoming mildly irritating. The irritation is a small price to pay for a son who now happily uses the potty. I just wish I had the book when my other children were small.

Many thanks to Mumsnet / Ladybird for this excellent book.

This is a bright and informative picture board book from Ladybird. Melanine Williamson's colourful illustrations perfectly complement Andrea Pinnington's writing. The child-friendly text is well-thought through, with an appealing main character. It is clear and very informative. This book is perfect for reading out aloud with one’s child, and will aid in breaking down the reluctance and angst associated with the transition from reliance on wearing nappies to using a potty for the first time/s.

Several editions of the book include a brilliant interactive audio 'CHEER' button, located at bottom right hand corner, which is great fun. Lovely book, bright and colourful for little ones. Not too sure about Polly being a Princess though.
However grandchild loves it and ran straight to her potty! Early days yet but definitely taking in the whole book and relating it to the potty.
Good tips for parents as well eg the ‘ Don’t worry ‘

A really fabulous book, that has captivated my little girl.

We are still a few months off potty training, so this book has proved incredibly useful in providing my little one with an excellent understanding in her soon to be new potty adventures. The story is easy for the little one to follow, with good sturdy pages, lovely illustrations and a truly fantastic cheer button (that's her favourite bit).

As a mother I am personally keen to avoid 'Princess' toys/books etc as I don't feel that this creates the right kind of message to my child, so I would be interested for Ladyboed to create alternate characters.

Overall, a great book and really useful.

Oops, talk about leaving it until the last minute to write my review! Sorry! Many thanks for sending us a copy of Pirate Pete’s Potty. My youngest son and I really enjoyed reading this book together, I like how it gets the child engaged with the story and the sound button is a definite winner! I liked the illustrations, the child in me even laughed at the poo in the potty! Blush Im sure this book will be enjoyed time and time again as we progress along the potty training journey. Thanks again!
