I enjoyed The Stand and the one where a town gets put under a bell jar, but i'm only half way through It and i'm just plain bored and considering giving up. It just seems to be going over the same ground over and over again. Is it worth finishing?

I tried reading it years ago and gave up , I agree with your thoughts on it - it seemed long for the sake of it.

V overrated.

BumWad · 02/09/2017 20:51

I gave up recently too

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/09/2017 20:57

I think it's wonderful. But if you're not enjoying it, stop.

IheartCaptainHolt · 02/09/2017 21:27

I really love this book but I agree with PP. Life is to short to slog your way through a book you are not enjoying

Mrsjohnmurphy · 02/09/2017 21:34

I love it, have read it a few times. Can't understand how you can get through the stand and not it, but we are all different (I love the stand too)

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 02/09/2017 21:42

What's the name of the book about the town that gets put under a bell jar?

Fwiw I tried to read It when I was a teen and never quite got to grips with it. I adore The Stand though, my favourite book.

raspberrysuicide · 02/09/2017 21:46

The Stand is one of my favourite books too. Actually I've just rekindled my love of Stephen King books and started collecting them again. I really want to reread It. The first time I read it I thought it was fantastic. Although every time I saw a balloon I got scared!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/09/2017 21:50

Under the Dome is the bell jar one.
Big Stephen King fan.

BumWad · 02/09/2017 21:50

Yes I loved the stand too. Really had to keep going with it but my goodness it got good

Ridingthegravytrain · 02/09/2017 22:07

I just re read it in preparation for watching the film. It's. It one of my favourites and I see where you are coming from

But I'd say it's ending is similar to under the dome so if you thought that ending was meh I wouldn't bother finishing

I like SK for supernatural horror but find his sci fi misses the mark

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 02/09/2017 22:11

Thanks OhYouBadKitten I'll have a look.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/09/2017 22:45

I've booked tickets for Saturday. Wonder if I can reread IT before then.

booellesmum · 02/09/2017 22:50

I love IT. It is a slow burner but worth persevering.
Most of Stephen Kings books are slow burners. That is one of the reasons they are so good - he builds the characters so you really get a feel for them.

Willow2017 · 03/09/2017 00:08

Read It in a couple of days when I was younger. I remember I was halfway through when I started reading in bed and it was 3am when I finished!

Loved 'The Stand'. COuldnt put it down.

Have had the box set of The Dark Tower' on my bookshelf for donkeys years, forgot all about it and have just started the 2nd book. Love it but that is some batshit crazy world right there!

If you dont like it then stop reading it. There are plenty more fab Stephen King books to chose from. Smile

lucydogz · 03/09/2017 07:46

Well I've finished (jumping chunks) . Just to see why people like it. Unfortunately I still don't get it and think it could be easily condensed into half the length. It's just constant repetition of disgusting things happening. And what's all that about all of them having sex with Beverley (who doesn't have public hair at that point so is well underage )in order to bond. That IS disgusting.

OP posts:
lucydogz · 03/09/2017 07:55

...and it really bothers me that all of the male protagonists are special in particular ways. But how is Beverley special - her sexuality. I really thought we'd got beyond all this shit.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/09/2017 07:58

That bit was grim, I agree. Written in 1986. I hope we have moved on.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/09/2017 07:59

Beverley is said to be 14.

ClashCityRocker · 03/09/2017 08:03

Yeah the gang bang in the sewer was a bit unnecessary.

Love the book though, but it is a slow burner and a bit meandering.

pippitysqueakity · 03/09/2017 13:09

Am so glad someone else finds the gangbanging unnecessary...and more than just a bit WTF?

helpmenotfuckthis · 03/09/2017 13:18

I really liked it. Read it at about 17. I do like a long novel though
