Catch 22 did you finish it?

Trying to read it for the second time. First time I was a teen and it went completely over my head. About 100pages in and not really feeling it and struggling to pick it up. Anyone else get through it? Is it worth it to keep going

No, it's shit and I have always hated it.

Mrsjohnmurphy · 31/08/2017 22:08

I liked it, thought it was really funny, was years ago I read it though.

CJCreggsGoldfish · 31/08/2017 22:10

No, I've tried 3 or 4 times over the last 15 years and just never felt it. I don't like to be beaten though so it's still sat on my bookshelf.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 31/08/2017 22:10

Yes I loved it.

Pollaidh · 31/08/2017 22:11

I really enjoyed it. It's not one I'd read again though.

Thegiantofillinois · 31/08/2017 22:13

Yes. Makes kore sense second time and when youbrealise it's not set in Vietnam

Mulch · 01/09/2017 09:21

I spent 6months forcing myself to read iq84, this seems similar, I just hate giving up on books it haunts me

Yes. It was a slog, but I seem to remember it being worth it by the end. Read it 10+ years ago now, so can't remember that much about it.

Outbackshack · 01/09/2017 20:39

I love it. Read it tens of times. Need to read it a few times I think to enjoy it

Ttbb · 01/09/2017 20:43

I loved it! But the plot does literally repeat itself three times (just like proceedings in the court martial) but that's kind of the point. If you are finding it hard, read slaughterhouse 5 first and compare and contrast with that while reading catch 22. It also follows a non-linear time plot so will help you warm up to it. A lot of people find non-linear timelines really daunting but I think they are a very useful literary technique. Kahzou Ishiguro has mastered non-linear timelines to a T. Definitely also worth a read if you are struggling with heller.

woollychimp · 02/09/2017 20:51

Yes - i really enjoyed it.

CupFullOfSpiders · 03/09/2017 00:07

Yes - finished and read it again countless times since. Love the comedy, the weirdness, the all-over-the-place-ness of it. I even named my firstborn after one of the characters Grin

I promise it's not Yossarian

HeadfirstForHalos · 03/09/2017 00:10

It's one of the two books I've not finished, the other is American Psycho. I just got really bored reading them! I've been told they're bit good books if you stick with them but I keep putting them off.

INeedNewShoes · 03/09/2017 00:12

Nope!

HeadfirstForHalos · 03/09/2017 00:13

I like 1984 though, even if it is completely depressing Grin

JaneJeffer · 03/09/2017 00:19

No, it was too boring, had to stop.

KurriKurri · 03/09/2017 17:35

I loved it.
But life is too short to force yourself to read books you aren't enjoying. I struggled with 1984 - both my kids love it - but I've just assigned it to being one of those 'cassics' that aren't for me (love orwell's other stuff).

I think you might want to give it a bit more than 100 pages to get into it if you are really keen to get through it, but otherwise find something that's more your bag.

Mulch · 07/09/2017 18:09

I've admitted defeat and started reading women in black. It's Sat on my shelf taunting me. I don't mind a bit of Orwell for some misery porn, Iq84s by Haruki Murakami and is an absolute repetitive slog of a book.

Have just realised that I purchased Catch 22 the other week when I has been meaning to get Catcher In The Rye so i suppose I'll have the opportunity to find out what I think of it now Hmm

user1471453601 · 08/09/2017 23:14

Is that a feather in my cap, or egg on my face? Can Major Mayor see me now, or do I have to wait untill he's out?

OP, are you referring to the book about Yossarian, who fell in love with Chaplin at first sight?

It's probably the best book I've ever read. But then, very few words words were blacked out. Only those who read past the first few pages of the book will have ANY idea what I'm talking about.

RosieTheQueenOfCorona · 08/09/2017 23:23

It's a spiral, not a straight line, the more times it loops round the better it gets.
