I'd second American psycho

TheEagle · 06/08/2017 21:23

I read a few of Mo Hayder's books after reading some threads here about scary books.

I found them so vile and disturbing, they really got under my skin. So yes they are scary but in a gruesome way rather than a supernatural way. If that makes sense?

Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood scared the bejesus out of me.

The audiobook of The Woman In Black was terrifying too. Couldn't face the book after that.

Any other scary ones I've read are Stephen King ones.

ISaySteadyOn · 06/08/2017 21:25

We Have Always Lived in the Castle and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

HardPiper · 06/08/2017 21:26

Just ordered Birdman for my kindle. Thanks for the recommendation Smile

MumBod · 06/08/2017 21:55

Jonathan Aycliffe.

nobodysbabynow · 06/08/2017 21:59

Any Adam Nevill.

PenguinOfDoom · 06/08/2017 22:00

Sorry, hit post too soon. Naomi's Room is terrifying, also The Matrix and his earlier books like Whispers in the Dark.

AaarghUsername · 06/08/2017 22:06

Definitely second House of Leaves - very unsettling.

And 100% agree with PenguinofDoom on Naomi's Room - utterly terrifying, especially when a roof tile had come off and a malignant pigeon decides to tapdance through the attic while I was reading it.

SnickersWasAHorse · 07/08/2017 00:11

Is House of Leaves printed on solid gold?
So many recommendations but it seems to be about £28 a copy!

Katescurios · 07/08/2017 00:17

Jack Ketchum really unsettling books. Girl next door is horrific, uncomfortable but compelling in a voyeuristic way. Off season is violent and bloody.

TheHiphopopotamus · 07/08/2017 00:20

The House Of Lost Souls by FG Cottam

And agree that most of Johnathan Aycliffes stuff is good.
