As int he title - I read a lot of thrillers, and enjoy thme, but have read too many recently and am getting a bit bored, I fancy something totally different. I like female protagonists (though that's not essential) I like stories about childhood, emotional books, but not really into chick lit and romance.

Things I have enjoyed in the past:

Elizabeth is Missing
The Guernsey Literary and potato pie society
H is for Hawk
The Orchard on Fire (Sheena Mackay)
Remarkable Creatures (Tracy Chevalier)

I also like family sagas, some historical stuff, and non fiction - I am interested in social history and medical books/medical history/forensic science (I enjoyed Val McDiarmud's history of Forensics, Henry Marsh's brain books, Henrietta Lacks, and The Emperor of Maladies)

All suggestions gratefully received - I will make a list and head for the library, I don't mind if it's a bit out there of wide of my remit - willing to give most stuff a go if someone thinks it's worth a read.

You might like to try Kate Atkinson - Behind the Scenes at the Museum is an intelligent, postmodern take on a family saga, emotional but not sentimental.

I recently read Elinor Oliphant is Completely Fine which has an offbeat female protagonist, it is a light ish read but with dark undertones.

My favourite read so far this year was The Essex Serpent.

I recently read The Light Between Oceans - very emotional, a really interesting story of morals. I enjoyed it very much. It isn't a detective story, but it does have slowly revealed information which links various people, keeps you on your toes (or your heart in your mouth).

I like the sound of all of these Smile I've read the Kate Atkinson (and enjoyed it) will definitely try the others.

All the Light we cannot see was good too (the title suggested above always reminds me of this one!) Set in Europe during WWII but character driven and a different slant than usual. Would have been a favourite if not for the ending (but you might like it, others have)

Have you read The Power by Naomi Alderman?

Vistaverde · 08/08/2017 14:14

You might like The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah - tells about the experiences of two sisters in France during WW2.

TheAntiBoop · 08/08/2017 14:19

Have you read any Russell h greenan? Crime/horror fiction with lots of black humour

It happened in Boston? is one of my favourites but there a few with female protagonists

CluelessMama · 08/08/2017 14:24

Non-fiction - The Skeleton Cupboard by Tanya Byron and The Outrun by Amy Liptrot are both good reads and might be up your street

MrsPnut · 08/08/2017 14:59

Have you read the Jodi Taylor - Chronicles of St Mary's series?

KurriKurri · 08/08/2017 21:47

EveryonetalksAbout - I have read the Lessons which I enjoyed, and the Power is on my wish list - looking forward to reading it.

I love the sound of The Outrun CluelessMama - that looks like exactly my kind of thing.

Many thanks for all the suggestions to everyone - I have a great list to take to the library Smile

Sharon Penman's historical fiction is good - she uses the "facts" and weaves them into her work but brings the characters to life.
I love "Here be Dragons" - it's about Joanna, an illegitimate daughter of King John who was married off at 14 to Llewellyn Fawr of Wales.

Man Called Ove Frerick Backman If you like the kind of Aspie thing.

The outrun _ m lipott

The weight of him - E Rothan ( warning could really upset as dealing with teenage suicide but amazingly well written, and deals with some v difficult issues re guilt and moving on)

The Snow Child

Anything by Gavin Extence truly love this author.

Excuse any typos, glasses upstairs and fat fingers. Know what you mean by too many psychological thrillers and police procedural.

Ps anything by Anne Tyler or Maggie O'farrell and Curtis Sitenfields American Wife, truly great.

I just finished The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney.

It was a total whim buy but very good, about 4 siblings who expect to come into a big inheritance then something happens because of one of them that threatens it. It's very much about their relationships with each other and other people.
