Going between kindle books and physical books

Matilda2013 · 28/07/2017 10:17

Although I used to be attached to my kindle like it was an extra arm, I have been borrowing as many books on my amazon wishlist as possible from the library and so haven't been using it as much.

I'm currently trying to read on a book on it and I can't tell if its the book itself, All Is Not Forgotten - Wendy Walker, or if I'm just struggling to get into it because I've adapted back to reading physical books. I normally don't have this but was wondering if anyone else struggles going between them?

I'm in the same situation. Was quite happy with my kindle paperwhite till all the books I wanted got so expensive, sometimes the kindle edition costs more than the actual book.
Now I mostly order books from the library or buy second hand online. I just use the kindle to read in bed as can never get comfortable using a bedside light.
I usually stop reading after a few minutes on the kindle now, used to read for hours.

It's strange because I never had the problem before! Just trying to save money by reserving at the library!

I quite often press the side of the page and wonder why it's not moved on to the next one.......

Matilda2013 · 28/07/2017 17:41

My kindle is much more convenient and comfortable for lying in bed! Forget how heavy and awkward books are

I love my Kindle but can only read 2 or 3 books on the bounce before I need to 'feel' a real book.

Matilda2013 · 29/07/2017 18:20

Well I've just picked up six new books on my reserved list on the library so will be back to real books soon Smile

I thought kindle versions were cheaper? Was thinking of buying a kindle for my DD as she is going to study A Level English Lit and thought it would be cheaper to buy books and easier to carry around. Am I wrong? I'm a big real book reader myself.

Matilda2013 · 29/07/2017 18:33

Lots of books have good deals on kindle but you need to wait for new books etc to come down in price. Much better for storage and moving about though! God knows I'd have no space left if I had all my kindle books in real life!

You can read library books on your Kindle. Or on the Fire anyway. You won't be able to on the Paperwhite, I shouldn't think.

MsHarry, get your daughter a Kindle Fire and a library subscription to the biggest libraries in your area. She should be able to access the university books on there. And a lot of classics can be bought very cheaply on Kindle (though she should check the reviews as some are poor quality.)

ImperialBlether · 29/07/2017 18:36

And your daughter will need to be careful when quoting Kindle editions, too (though she should ask her tutors about that.)

ChessieFL · 29/07/2017 18:41

Bear in mind though that the Kindle Fire is a tablet, and some people struggle reading a backlit screen for a long period. She might be better off getting a deducted ereader kindle if she's going to be reading a lot, but then as Imperial said she won't be able to use library books on it. Re cost - lots of the classics are free on kindle, and you can get lots of cheap books for kindle but newer books aren't that cheap in the kindle edition.

ImperialBlether · 29/07/2017 18:46

But if you look at the reviews of the classics - the free ones - then often it seems someone's just typed it up or photocopied the pages, so the quality is very poor.

ImperialBlether · 29/07/2017 18:48

Eg just looked up Jane Eyre in Kindle. 99p. I looked at the one star reviews and the first one said:

not clear that you are getting an almost a4 book with multiple pages arranged in columns on each page. it is not a pleasant way to try to read it and is a non standard format for a book. I went and bought a 'proper' copy from WH Smiths so that i could write notes for each page in the margin as this was purchased for an academic course.

MsHarry · 29/07/2017 18:48

Oh all good advice thanks. She doesn't need a tablet so would be looking at the Paperwhite version. Had no idea about reading library books on it. I went to my local library (large town) to borrow a few classics. They had no Jane Austen, not even on the system!! I ordered a copy on Amazon and it arrived today and was an A4 amazon version. Very text book looking but it is just the novel inside, no notes or anything. Very strange.

MsHarry · 29/07/2017 18:49

Oh imperial x posted!

MsHarry · 29/07/2017 18:50

Sorry meant to say copy of Pride and Prejudice.

ImperialBlether · 29/07/2017 18:50

Maybe someone here has a daughter at university studying Eng Lit and could advise?

RMC123 · 29/07/2017 18:55

I did English Lit at uni many moons ago. I would have struggled with a Kindle as I liked to make notes on my books and mark pages for tutorials . I know you can do that on a kindle but when I have tried it for simple things like book club etc it's always taken ages. But maybe that's just me being a Luddite!

MsHarry · 29/07/2017 18:56

Interestingly I have just gone onto Amazon to arrange a return and they have refunded the cost incl post and packaging(over £8) and said I don't need to return the book! Result!

MsHarry · 29/07/2017 18:57

I don't intend it to be a replacement for normal books, just an addition for travelling etc.

strawberrypenguin · 29/07/2017 19:08

Nope. I chop and change between my kindle and print books all the time! Sometimes I might read 2 or 3 in one format before changing but I swap quite a lot. I love both!

Urglewurgle · 29/07/2017 19:16

MsHarry I think she'd find it tricky to study literature on a kindle. I've struggled with a workout book in the gym just cos you can't flick back and forth so easy, can't jot a quick note, compare two passages as easily etc. I love my kindle but it's for reading for pleasure!

Matilda2013 · 29/07/2017 19:24

strawberrypenguin I was always the same not sure if it's the book I'm reading at the moment!

Thanks all.

I much prefer kindle. I tried a couple of paper books a year or two ago, maybe because they were cheap in the supermarket but really didn't like the experience. Kindle much easier, especially to read in bed.

I track mine on ereaderiq so buy when a pound or two, at 99p it's cheaper than the reservation fee at the library.

It's rare that I pay more than that so the kindle has saved me a fortune, or more accurately, I've had many more books for the same amount of money.
