Looking for good German books for women

Just that really... books based in Germany written by women for women, fiction, in either English or German ... not historical.

I used to live there and miss Germany, so would like to read something contemporary to make me feel like I'm there!

Ok, here goes, all by women....

The Lighthouse www.tripfiction.com/books/the-lighthouse/
SnowWhite Must Die www.tripfiction.com/books/snow-white-must-die/
Book of Clouds www.tripfiction.com/books/book-of-clouds/
Stasiland www.tripfiction.com/books/stasiland/
Wallflower www.tripfiction.com/books/wallflower-2/

You might find there are some interesting books published by Peirene Press and/or Maclehose who specialise in lit from Europe. Hope that helps!!

Great thanks! I'll have a look ... I've heard of Stasiland Smile

Just searched my bookshelf and I already have the lighthouse ... picked it up in a charity shop a few weeks ago. I've ordered Wallflower and Book of Clouds from Amazon Marketplace. Can't wait! I'll start the Lighthouse tonight.

I really enjoy Sebastian Fitzek. I'm reading Der Augensammler at the moment and I can't put it down!

Royally missed the point of the post there...Confused

untenrum frei margarete stokowski - a feminist take on growing up female.

not written by a woman - sadly, but the main character is a female police inspector ostfriesenkrimis

Mind you, Stasiland isn't fiction but is still very good. Another in similar vein is Frauen which is a collection of interviews with women who lived through the 3rd Reich. So not contemporary either!!

Judith Hermann might appeal. She does novels and short stories. Somebody Erpenbeck also. I've forgotten her first name.

RubyRoseRing · 27/06/2017 21:19

Jenny Erpenbeck in fact

RubyRoseRing · 27/06/2017 21:26

Louise Welsh's Girl on the Stair is quite good.

Yorkshirebornandbred · 27/06/2017 21:33

Thanks! Judith Hermann and Jenny Erpenbeck's books look great!

My book shelves are quite chaotic just now but another I forgot yesterday is a collection of stories in the cities series. Berlin Tales. Translated by Lyn Marven and edited by Helen Constantine. In there are several pieces by women, about half of them.

Julia Franck has done some good stories too. She also features in Berlin Tales.

Yorkshirebornandbred · 29/06/2017 14:17

Thanks, sounds perfect ... just ordered it from Amazon Marketplace Smile

You've enthused me to read or reread some of those works. Smile
