Enid - the first HP is not very well written (nor is the second tbh) but they improve dramatically after that.

Saturn74 · 14/03/2007 10:43

Try the Spiderwicke Chronicles next, Enid!

Enid · 14/03/2007 10:44

and Dimanche Diller is also good and similarish

dd1 and I laugh like drains at Sunny Baudelaires language and her love of biting (all very close to home having 10 month old dd3)

oooooooooooooooh I love Dimanche Diller

she is so capable

Enid · 14/03/2007 10:46

yes what a role model

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 14/03/2007 10:46

her and Clever Polly

Enid · 14/03/2007 10:48

dd3 has Polly as a middle name because of her

I wish I had gone for Dimanche for dd1 now

OP posts:
Enid · 14/03/2007 10:49

I could have had Dimanche, Violet and Polly

how wonderfully poncey

ds (5) in bed watching Harry Potter as we tap!

Lemony Snicket is more for the girlies but what equally excellent books are available for the boys?

foxinsocks · 14/03/2007 10:51

lol

I love the name Valeburga Vilemile

and you have Polly the nanny in DD too

TenaLady · 14/03/2007 10:51

Spiderwick Chronicles sounds good, is it for girls or boys or both do you think?

Enid · 14/03/2007 10:53

I would have thought Lemony Snicket is great for boys too?

Don't agree about Lemony Snicket being more for girlies. I listen to yr 4 readers in the DDs' school and loads of the boys are reading Lemony. Some are also reading a series by Katherine Roberts based on the seven wonders of the world here which seems pretty good too.

Saturn74 · 14/03/2007 10:57

I have two boys. They both love 'Series of...' and 'The Spiderwicke Chronicles'.
Also 'The Ratbridge Chronicles' by Alan Snow, which has superb illustrations.

TenaLady · 14/03/2007 10:59

Oh will have a look at Lemony and Spiderwick, are they aimed at a certain age group though?

RosaLuxembourg · 14/03/2007 11:01

What age group do you need suggestions for? Much expertise on this forum .

TenaLady · 14/03/2007 11:22

boy age 5 and likes Harry Potter

Enid · 14/03/2007 11:24

I think 5 is too young for Lemony Snicket

OP posts:
RosaLuxembourg · 14/03/2007 12:26

Do you mean books to read aloud to him rather than for him to read by himself? What has he enjoyed so far? How many of the HP have you got through? - they may start going above his head at a certain point unless he is an exceptionally mature 5-year-old.

I would suggest - the obvious ones to start with
Roald Dahl
Horrid Henry
Secret Seven

Will have a think for more.

DS (now 13) loved Lemony Snickett which he read himself, but DD (8) and I got rather bored reading aloud in about book 8. Peril - overcome - peril - overcome - peril - overcome and that is another book finished. We found it very repetitive. On the other hand, we listened to a tape of one of the books when driving to France, and all of us loved it.

KTeePee · 14/03/2007 12:29

Enid, I agree they are good books for children but from my own POV I was starting to lose the will to live long before the last one.....

Enid · 14/03/2007 12:43

yes I can imagine the thrill will wear off before book 13
