Just finished this, thought it was ok, not great. I thought it would have been better if it just told the story, rather than mucking about with the chronology so much.

quite agree. i've read her other one as well..... but cant for the life of me remember what it's called..... was better i thought. someone said she was "a bit like anne tyler"...... err, no.

Nockney · 05/03/2007 07:17

No, Anne Tyler actually gets emotionally involved with her characters, and the whole thing seems real. I can see a small resemblance (both talk about chaotic family situations, and sometimes the characters aren't too annoyed about the whole thing), but still ...

have you read gerard woodward's trilogy.... begins with august, then i'll go to bed at noon and now the third is just out....... family saga..... totally emotionally gripping / bit disturbing / really good.

Nockney · 06/03/2007 07:19

I read I'll Go To Bed At Noon, as part of a Booker thing. It freaked me the hell out, tbh - as a foreigner in this country, the drinking thing scares me half to death, tbh ... I thought it was very well-written and all, and involving, but I think if I read the trilogy, I'll just want to emigrate!

I have to read more of that bloke who did Mother's Milk. Not quite the same sort of thing, but still.

oooh. understand what you mean re the woodward..... didnt know you had delicate foreign sensibilities .... i found mothers milk hard going at the beginning and then lost it. must give it another go. his other one is some hope isnt it??. v posh. v odd i think.
what do you mean when you casually say "part of a booker thing"? [nosy emoticon]

Nockney · 06/03/2007 20:18

Oh, Book People sell the Booker Shortlist for £30 every year. I always get them, and read them. I've found some very good books that way. I suspect you were hoping for something more impressive!

Other MNers do this, too, sometimes we have a sort of reading group/whinge thing on about it.

Yes, the start of Mother's Milk isn't great, but it does pick up.

Are you a fan of Anne Tyler?

i love book people. buy half my christmas presents from there! in fact bought bil and sil the booker list this year. have never looked at book club type threads on here before, but will now.
i dooooo like ann tyler but think some of her more recent work isnt as good..... loved patchwork planet, thought digging to america (?) or whatever it was called was weak.

Nockney · 06/03/2007 20:25

Oh, don't think I've read Digging to America, tend to pick her stuff up as and when, a bit. I do like her, but they do all blend together a bit, eventually. I probably need to find more authors to like.

(Oh, got into Ali Smith from the Booker thing, and wow she is good.)

simplycontrolfreaky · 06/03/2007 20:32

hoxtonchick · 06/03/2007 20:42

simplycontrolfreaky · 06/03/2007 22:10
