I'm on the 50 book threads and I've noticed that quite a lot of people listen to audiobooks as well as reading actual books.
I like the idea of being able wash up/do the ironing/walk to the shops while still reading/listening.

So...where do you all get your audiobooks from? I know that audible is a thing, but I'm hoping to not spend too much more on books than I already do, and audible looks expensive.
I'm going to check out my library but I'm not sure how great it is for e/audio stuff.

Listening to our endless numbered days and loving it. Fabulous story and narration. Love it when I find a book I look forward to listening to Smile

I'm currently working my way through Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie novels on audible and really looking forward to listening to them!

pithivier · 16/01/2017 15:13

My big surprise of last year was the Count of Monte Cristo. Not a book I would have chosen but my DD told me I would love it. Perfect narration and a story to really get your teeth into.

Librivox are a group of volunteers who read out-of-copyright books and make them available for free. If you have favourite classics that's a lovely place to start.

I'm also an audible subscriber. If you fancy something extra to your one book a month, then it's good to know that it's often cheaper to buy extra credits than purchase a book directly. I've just listened to The Making of a Marchioness by Frances Hodgson-Burnett, which is an interesting example of her work for adult readers (though I have The Secret Garden, too!)

Just marking my place here, have just finished a Murakami-loved the goldfinch & probably want to try a Stephen King next. Bought the 24 book subscription & would like to make the most of it-particularly to hear big books that Id be too lazy to read. Someone mentioned about getting 2 for 1 deals on subscription so Id be interested on ideas for that and also any other recs!

IQ84 is a great one for value for money & a great listen!

pithivier · 17/01/2017 18:48

Sign up for the daily deal. You get a book for lower than the price of the credit. Also create a wish list. Occasionally if you buy 3 books using credits or cash, in a certain period you get a £10"credit. It is very good, you can still return the book and they will recredit the value. It also seems to last a long while.

buckeejit · 17/01/2017 21:31

Great thanks-need to up my wishlist!

I love audible too. I love lots of the comedy autobiography's which are read by the author. Really enjoyed Miranda hart and David Mitchell. Plus the Harry Potter books. Plus girl with a dragon tattoo trilogy. Also pride and prejudice. So many good ones!

I really loved this mobile.audible.co.uk/pd/Fiction/Les-Liaisons-Dangereuses-Audiobook/B01B3DUKGG . It was free. Recently I've enjoyed the new Zadie Smith (fab narrator) and the Conclave by Robert Harris. This month I'm listening to Andrew Marr's History of the World. I would get bored reading it I think but it's very good to listen to.

crapfatbanana · 29/01/2017 19:10

Another Audible fan here. I recently got a £10 reward which I used on 99p and £1.99 daily deals. I have 18 unlistened to books and 4 unused credits so I might pause my account so I can catch up with myself.

Listening to The Black Widow by Chris Brookmyre currently. First Brookmyre for me but I want to read/listen to more.

The only thing I find frustrating is when I'm listening in the car when I go to pick the children up from school and have to turn off!

stupidphone · 30/01/2017 19:42

I am a new addict to audible! I have listened to The book thief, The Help and now To kill a mocking bird. I was a bit sneaky and used a few different email addresses etc to get free trials! Also if you go to cancel it they offer you another book and then three months at a reduced price. I need more than 1 credit a month! But can't afford up to £35 for a further book! May have to look into a different subscription or how you can better deals for your "credits"!

buckeejit · 03/02/2017 23:17

There's a bogof on audible until Sunday so I got 2 for the price of 1.

However, I've just realised that the one I've started, I've already read 😳

Can anyone recommend anything off the list to swap it for & is 'I forgot I'd already read it' a good enough return response?!

ChessieFL · 04/02/2017 07:28

I can't see the BOGOF on the app, maybe it's only been offered to some members?

mugglebumthesecond · 04/02/2017 07:32

Just listened to Dark Matter by Michelle Paver - short but atmospheric, would certainly reccomend, the narration is wonderful....and starting the Poisoneood Bible now.

Burial Rites is the daily deal today Smile

AstrantiaMajor · 04/02/2017 07:53

@buckeejit . You can return books for any reason. There is a drop down list choose already own it, if that's not there choose other. The great thing about Audible is the no quibble returns policy

buckeejit · 05/02/2017 18:40

I've read dark matter & liked it.

The daily deal & some offers only on the desktop site for some reason-think the bogof on selected items ends/ended today. I've started another lianne moriarty-little lies & like it.

I've returned the book but they've refunded me a credit & it was the bogof so should've had half a credit. Don't know how that would work though!

I've seen that you can log on to 4 different devices on the same account so have given my trusted friend my details in the hope that she'll try & like it & then maybe we can split an annual membership!

AnnaMazzWriter · 05/02/2017 23:09

The best thing about Audible is Whispersync. You can listen to the audio while you're changing nappies/doing the school run etc, and then your Kindle will sync to wherever you've got to in the book. Magic.

I recommend everything read by Bernadette Dunne, especially We Have Always Lived in the Castle and The Haunting of Hill House - both Shirley Jackson novels. Also Sarah Waters' The Paying Guests, read by Juliet Stevenson.

Deathraystare · 14/02/2017 15:12

Also if you like 'gentle' murders with a bit of humour try Simon Brett - He did the Charles paris books (ham actor). Read by Bill Nighy - wonderful. Paris has an on-off relationship with his ex wife Frances. I just love listening to Bill Nighy! Also there is another series with two women sleuths. One is a hippy type and the other a buttoned up type. Somehow they are friends...and the bodies keep turning up!!

PerspicaciaTick · 14/02/2017 15:15

My library (well the entire county) allows members to downloaded selected audio and e-books from its website for free.
