hard times is probably the shortest, so a good starting point. Dickens' novels can be v.long indeed.

A Christmas Carol as it is short and well known, then Great Expectations, then Oliver Twist. After that you'll be hooked!!

God no - not a tale of two cities! Have just abandoned it about 100 pages in.

I'd go for great expectations or a Christmas carol.
