southeastdweller · 01/01/2017 10:12

Welcome to the first thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2017, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

Who's in for this year?

Hope your friends are okay Cote

Kiki, I hope you get on with Swing Time, a favourite of mine from last year's reading list.

Stitches, how are you and the baby?

CheckpointCharlie2 · 01/01/2017 23:51

Thinking of you cote it's senseless Sad

StitchesInTime · 02/01/2017 00:17

Baby is gaining weight nicely and settling into a pattern of merrily cluster feeding into the early hours now his tongue tie's been sorted.

Perfect opportunity to get stuck into reading something on the kindle, if I can stop getting distracted by mumsnet/Facebook/games on the kindle fire Wink

diamantegal · 02/01/2017 00:21

How is this so full already?! Me too please if I may?

Currently reading the first Harry Potter in French (who knew Hogwarts was Poudlard?!) so will start counting after I've finished that.

Some will be classy, most won't. And hopefully I travel enough for work to finish A Suitable Boy which I need to read in longer stints than I generally manage. That's my one ambition for this year!

SatsukiKusakabe · 02/01/2017 00:29

Ah, stitches babies can be so obliging giving you regular bursts of reading time throughout the night Smile Congratulations if I didn't say it before.

diamantegal · 02/01/2017 00:39

Just coming back to say ChillieJeanie I like your idea of reading the Goodreads classic each month. I'm signed up to the vipers book group but never really join in - that would be a great NY resolution. I'm in!

placeofworkshop · 02/01/2017 00:40

Making notes of lots of these books , but 50 ? A book a week seems very ambitious , how do people manage that? Long commute on public transport?

diamantegal · 02/01/2017 00:55

No, just a conscious effort to go to bed 10/15 minutes earlier and read instead of watching TV and drinking wine

Agreed I miss my commute for reading time (even if a 25 minute drive is SO much easier than an hour's train journey) but if you want to read, there's always a way...

Vidorra · 02/01/2017 01:22

That's great, I have high hopes for The Paying Guests now. Read Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet some years ago and I enjoyed them both.

Cote, I somehow missed your post. I do hope your friends are ok and you hear soon Flowers

SaladDressing · 02/01/2017 01:35

I'm in!

I managed 54 last year - should have been 55 but I got really fed up with #55 and abandoned it on December 30th (I may go back to it at some point or maybe life's too short? Smile)

I have Nigel Owens' autobiography, 'Hurrah for Gin' and 'The Woman Next Door' lined up for January.

MrsS1980 · 02/01/2017 01:36

I'm in! Want to focus on books and not Netflix this year. Let's see how we do!

SatsukiKusakabe · 02/01/2017 01:46

I don't really have a set portion of time to read like a commute but if I'm into a book I'll just read whenever, it's not a chore to be fit in. I read during toddler naps if I get them, while I'm cooking, if the kids are watching tv, in the evenings, in bed, first thing when I have a cup of tea...if my dh gives the kids a bath I'll read instead of finding jobs to do...waiting for anything...

BitterBlue · 02/01/2017 07:36

I'm in too this year. Read 36 books last year and will set my target at 50 although it might be a bit ambitious. Starting Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard today.

MontyFox · 02/01/2017 08:01

  1. NW
  2. A God in Ruins

Not going to beat myself up over how many books I read this year - I want to be ok with taking on long slow books (yes, This Thing of Darkness, I am looking at you). Excited to be on this thread though after I missed the 2016 one.

Redglitter · 02/01/2017 08:11

My target last year was 104. Managed 107 so going for 110 this year

DeliveredByKiki · 02/01/2017 08:25

Cote I'm so sorry too

Needastrongone · 02/01/2017 08:39

Cote Flowers

Going to start The Power today, which I bought DD (15) for Christmas.

I've ordered the following from Amazon, which should be here today.

Where My Heart Used to Beat - Sebastian Faulks.
All the Light We Cannot See - Anthony Doerr.
His Bloody Project - Graheme Burnett.

I've gone back to paperbacks from the Kindle in the last few months, so I shall also investigate the local library, which we are lucky enough still to have in our village, albeit on tiny hours now.

Do cookery books count? I spend hours scouring new ones!

Stokey · 02/01/2017 08:40

Thinking of you Cote , hard times.

The Lovelace book sounds interesting, I've never read a graphic novel, maybe this is a good place to start.

Cote Flowers
I've finished the teatime islands by Ben fogle, it's worth a read if you like books about off the beaten track places. I'm now reading Oliver tearle's the secret library: a book lover's journey through curiosities of history. It better be good because I broke my new year resolution yesterday because of it.

HandsomeDevil · 02/01/2017 09:11

Bloody hell Cote. I hope your loved ones are safe.

Sadik · 02/01/2017 09:35

Thinking of you Cote, I hope you manage to get some news soon.

Do try the Lovelace book, Stokey, I can't recommend it highly enough. (Now waiting for someone to read it and hate it . . .)

southeastdweller · 02/01/2017 09:41

I've kicked off with the Bruce Springsteen memoir and also have an Ian Rankin on the go - both very good so far.

Sending love, Cote.

I finished The Essex Serpent last night. I really liked it. Review to follow - need to post and run at the moment!
