50 Book Challenge 2017 Part One

southeastdweller · 01/01/2017 10:12

Welcome to the first thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2017, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

Who's in for this year?

I'm in too. I've got a very good reason for wanting to make the most of 2017. Have a lot of reading that would help me with my job. But also want to get back to reading for pleasure (used to be a voracious reader in teen years and 20s but got out of habit since meeting dh).

SatsukiKusakabe · 01/01/2017 14:06

Yes, remus it could have ended there and been perfect...especially tying in with the reading of Jules Verne and being left to wonder. Disappointing, why do so many books do this? They follow the compulsion to tie up ends rather than follow the natural rhythm of the story.

SatsukiKusakabe · 01/01/2017 14:11

For bold you put an asterisk either side of the words like this but with no gaps.

We try to use bold for book titles on the thread so it's easier to follow a discussion about certain books (or avoid spoilers if you're reading it!) As you can see already it moves quite fast and can be hard to keep track.

Welcome all newbies Smile

Okkitokkiunga · 01/01/2017 14:11

Happy New Year All. Today I have started The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro. I am looking forward to getting some recommendations this year as I tend to always read and reread similar genres/authors.

SatsukiKusakabe · 01/01/2017 14:12

I guarantee your TBR will not reduce if you follow this thread, bootygirl Grin

Mirandawest · 01/01/2017 14:13

Hello. Not sure how many I will read but have started a page in my new notebook to record them Smile

Iamblossom · 01/01/2017 14:40

Hi all. Happy New Year!

I managed 31 in 2016:

  1. The Silkworm
  2. The Exit
  3. The Donor
  4. Stolen Child
  5. Life, Death and Vanilla Slices
  6. A Most Desirable Marriage
  7. Behind closed doors
  8. Camberwell Beauty
  9. Having a Lovely Time
10. Hidden Treasures 11. Poldark Book 1 12. Versions of us 13. Moving 14. Try not to breathe 15. Poldark book 2 16. All the light we cannot see 17. The missing 18. My Husband's Wife 19. City of mirrors 20. Between me and you 21. The bones of you 22. After You 23. Poldark book 3 24. Secret life of bees 24. Poldark book 4 25. The darkest secret 26. Poldark book 5 27. My sister's grave 28. The Last Act of Love 29. The sea sisters 30. Poldark book 6 31. The Good Girl

I am really enjoying the poldark books so this year will see me trying to finish those. I also really enjoyed Jenny Eclair's books, really very good.

eckythumpenallthat · 01/01/2017 14:41

I'm in. I've got so lazy when it comes to reading and find it far to easy just to switch the telly on. 50 is going to be one hell of a challenge (I'm a slow reader) but like anything I guess it's just training and getting used to it and making it routine :)

Okkitokkiunga · 01/01/2017 14:42

As I have just joined, can I ask for some recommendations for books please. I do like historical fiction/mysteries/crime, and sci-fi especially though am open to other genres. I do have to be careful about content as I can't sleep - anything horrible happening to children in books and at night it becomes my children in my trying to fall asleep state. I wish I'd never read Torey Hayden's books!!!!

I have Paul Hoffman's Left Hand of God trilogy to read and a couple of Jack Reacher books

AnneEtAramis · 01/01/2017 14:45

I have joined a few times and never quite made it to the end. I managed 24 this year and with work and an MA going on I have set my GoodReads target at 30 this year.

As I have an essay due early in January I am starting with The Universe versus Alex Woods. I usually start the year with Jane Austen but as I finished 2016 with Lady Susan I have made an exception.

GetAHaircutCarl · 01/01/2017 14:48

Okkit for sci fi I pass on a bit recommendation from an earlier thread ( from cote ? ) - the Red Rising series. Utterly brilliant.

Upsetmummy27 · 01/01/2017 14:48

I'm in. Just started Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare.

newroundhere · 01/01/2017 14:52

Newbie here but I'm in - read almost nothing n the second half of last year (DS has just turned 5 months....) but hoping to have a bit more time this year as have a huge pile of books waiting to be read.

Just started Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier.

A PP mentioned Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch - love that series and especially that first book. Quirky, funny and very interesting if you live in or like London. I love books set in places that I know.

HandsomeDevil · 01/01/2017 15:08

I'd like to join this year.
I think 50 is a little ambitious (2 smallish DC and commuting by car have stolen much of my reading time), but will hang around here for ideas of reading material.

Starting the year with The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet.

Sadik · 01/01/2017 15:22

Happy New Year all :) And thank you for the new thread, southeast

A bit of a cheat as I only had a couple of chapters left, but it might as well go here:

  1. The Hacienda: How Not To Run a Club by Peter Hook
A cheapy from the Kindle sale. Does what it says on the tin - entertaining year-by-year history of the carcrash that was running the Hacienda, by the New Order/Joy Division bass player-come-part owner of the club. Doesn't live up to 24 Hour Party People (the film) though - you really need the music to bring it all to life.

My first full book for 2017 is The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage - having a chilled sofa day and loving it so far :)

spinningheart · 01/01/2017 15:45

I'm in. Have lurked for too long! I've just started The Nest by Cythia D'aprix Sweeney and so far I really like it. Am listening to Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.

My favourite of last year was The Boys of My Youth by Joann Beard which was a series of essays, like a memoir but not in chronological order. It was absolutely beautiful, so perceptive, and I can't believe she isn't better known. Two essays 'Hal' and 'The Fourth State of Matter' stand out in my memory more than the others but the entire book was fantastic.

I have way too many books on my shelves that haven't been read so I'm going to try my best to abstain from buying any more until they are read. This might even see me through the year. Blush

Matilda2013 · 01/01/2017 15:47

Just checking in on the new thread. Read 58 books this year and aiming for around 60/65 next year and to try and not buy any more books and make a dent in all my unread kindle purchases!

2017couldbegood · 01/01/2017 15:49

I'm in! Just started Vet on call today, 253 pages in so far.

KeithLeMonde · 01/01/2017 15:49

Me please!!

Current read is NW by Zadie Smith. Loving most of it, finding some parts a bit silly.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 01/01/2017 15:50

hello all - am in for 2017! Aiming for 60 as well this year, managed 55 in 2016.

Anything good in the Kindle Monthly sale for January?

eckythumpenallthat - I started reading again for fun a couple of years ago, I realised I could find time to watch a couple of half hour TV programmes, so that's an hour a day, most 350/400 page books on Kindle reckon on 4-5hours to read, so easily 1 book a week, if you make it your thing to do other than watching soaps.

Tarahumara · 01/01/2017 15:58

Checking in on 2017 thread. Happy new year everyone!

whitewineandchocolate · 01/01/2017 16:05

Hello All,

Having dropped off the 2016 thread mid way through I want to stay on track this year. Kicking off with Mr Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore (for book group) plus The Muse on audiobook.

MrsDOnofrio · 01/01/2017 16:24

Can I join please? I love reading but I'm studying full-time at the moment so my reading for pleasure has been on the back burner. I have a ridiculous number of unread books on my Kindle and my bookshelves. I'm going to start with Tuesday's with Morrie.

Is it cheating to include study books in my 50? Smile

EverySongbirdSays · 01/01/2017 16:27

Oooo Ooooo checking in.

Will be doing it this year.

Have several for my course that I have to read will out self if anyone is on the same course

Okkitokkiunga · 01/01/2017 16:39

If we can count our study books, I'm reading a right corker at the moment : Microhistories: demography, society and culture in rural England, 1800-1930.
