I've just finished The vanishing act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell and was very gripped by it. It's a shortish, easy, intelligent read so would be good for travelling. First book I've actually managed to finish since having ds 3 months ago!

shonaspurtle · 18/02/2007 22:57

It's still in hardback but might be one of those books that is available in a special softback airport edition.

mummytosteven · 18/02/2007 22:59

what sort of books do you normally like?

dressedupnowheretogo · 18/02/2007 23:01

shadows in the wind its about barcelona and its a spanish book thats been translated

my bf bought it me coz we were going to barca

Molesworth · 18/02/2007 23:01

Difficult because unputdownability is so subjective isn't it?

My unputdownables might not be yours, however I couldn't put down:

The Remains of the Day
Toast (Nigel Slater)
Curious Incident of Dog in the Night Time
Woman in White
Pride and Prejudice/Persuasion
The Quincunx (Charles Palliser)
Anna Karenina
(dare I say it) Notes on a Scandal
The Handmaid's Tale (Margaret Atwood)
The Reader (Bernhard Schlink)
The Wrong Boy (Willy Russell)

mummytosteven · 18/02/2007 23:04

yes, yes, yes to Handmaid's Tale and Remains of the Day. Have to say I thoroughly loathed shadow of the wind.

I hated Shadow of the Wind too
I loved: The Kite Runner
The Island (easy reading)
Rebecca
My mind has gone blank now!

I've been reading some of the Robin Hudson series by Sparkle Hayter and I've embarassed myself by snickering on the tube and on Friday I was so absorbed I missed my stop.

first book

kidsrus · 18/02/2007 23:13

i enjoyed "the rise and fall of a yummy mummy" by polly williams.
i had a good laugh and couldn't put it down as i wanted to know what she was going to do next. ohh how the other half live.lol

3andnomore · 19/02/2007 16:41

Anything from Toery Hayden...just finished her Ghost Girl, and it was an amzing read!
Maeve Binchy is a good writer, imo...

Whoooosh · 19/02/2007 16:43

Tell No One-Harlan Coben-fantastic read-had me gripped from beginning to end.

3andnomore · 19/02/2007 16:44

Another book I read recently, and found unputtdownable is "Little Face" by Sophie Hannah

Blandmum · 19/02/2007 16:46

The red tent.

Recomended to me by Jimjams and I had to stay up till 2 one night to finish it!

shonaspurtle · 19/02/2007 21:59

Ooh - The red tent is fab! (dh still refers to af as being "in the red tent" [hmm[)

Definitely an unputdownable read.

ArcticRoll · 19/02/2007 22:08

Ooh off the top of my head
Fingersmith Sarah Waters
The Kite Runner
We Need to Talk About Kevin (a pretty gruelling read but will keep your mind off flying)

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 19/02/2007 22:13

Of the top of my head too... a really good thriller someone gave me called Baggage.. can't remember the author; lent it to a friend.. but honestly I couldn't put it DOWN!!

Will try and find it on Amazon...

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 19/02/2007 22:15

Here

Totally unputdownable I promise...

Aloha · 19/02/2007 22:17

I loved Notes on A Scandal too. Must read The Red Tent.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 19/02/2007 22:18

Yes Notes on a Scandal also unputdownable. Disturbing but compelling.. read it in one night.. all night.. [bleary eyed emoticon]

BadHair · 19/02/2007 22:27

Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkins was the last book that gave me very late nights.
Agree with Molesworth about Toast, Curious Incident of the Dog and Anna Karenina (though I'm still going on the latter).
Memoirs of a Geisha, but you probably know that inside out by now.

ArcticRoll · 19/02/2007 22:28

Just remembered Douglas Kennedy-The Big Picture, A Special Relationship, The Pursuit of Happiness, not great literature but good page turners (the covers are naff though)

EddieMonsoon · 19/02/2007 22:32

I agree, Douglas Kennedy is great. I loved The Island by Victoria Hislop. If you like historical novels then the Philippa Gregory books are great, especially The Other Boleyn Girl and The Boleyn Inheritance.

Molesworth · 19/02/2007 22:38

ooh yes We Need To Talk About Kevin was really gripping, although many report finding it hard to get into
