Anything in that vein that you'd recommend? Books I've enjoyed include The Stand, Atwood's Handmaid's Tale and Oryx & Crake trilogy, Justin Cronin's trilogy which starts with The Twelve... I'll give absolutely anything a go tbh. I loved Auster's In The Country of Last Things too, if that counts.

Also, alternate history novels- any you think are great? And maybe sci fi too- I love Mary Doria Russell's The Sparrow and Children of God and the first book in The Forever War series, for example.

All suggestions will be tried outo. I live to read and I don't consider reading even a book I hate to be wasted time :)

I wouldn't call WWZ dystopian. Apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic, but not dystopian.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. Set in an alternative present and truly disturbing.

Why did you think Never Let Me Go is an alternate present story? I'm curious.

I thought it was clearly set in a near future.

Dystopian i guess in the sense that it's a vision of the future?

Hrafnkel · 30/10/2016 21:01

Ya but I quite liked the declaration trilogy.

"Dystopian i guess in the sense that it's a vision of the future?"

That's not what Dystopian means, though.

Most sci-fi or speculative fiction is "a vision of the future".

I read YA dystopian fiction but would recommend:

unwind series - YA but quite grown up. I really enjoyed the four books, haven't read everything on here so don't know if you've already been recommended them but they are great.

Flawed - Cecilia Aherne. Found this quite descriptive and shocking at times.

Delirium trilogy - very YA but good nonetheless. Love is a disease you are cured of at 16.

I love dystopian fiction but had to take a break as my outlook was getting bleaker lol.

Less frequently mentioned YA dystopias :

The Giver by Lois Lowry
The Pure Series by Julianna Baggott

Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban is outstanding.
