My dd is a free reader now and is keen to read almost any thing. The big problem the lenght of time she can stick to one book. I'm looking for very short chapter books may be 30-40 pages so she won't end up giving up 1/2 way though. Would be very grateful if any one could help me on this one.

the Rainbow Fairies books are good for this (gag) ditto Secret Unicorn and a whole host of other horrors that she'll no doubt get addicted to (think it's a rite of passge with little girls!)

Laura's Star has a chapter book out that has pictures

Winnie the Witch (not a chapter book but longer than a normal picture book)

DumbledoresGirl · 09/02/2007 12:38

Oh foxinsocks, I gave dd one of the rainbow fairy books for Christmas (her namesake) which she had been asking for for ages. She has since told me that she wants every single one of the rainbow fairy books.

The Secret Unicorn series, DD loves this.

Also, this book, Nightlights . DD loves this; has been a favourite since she got it an I bought it for my friend's little girl too who also loves it.

Keeping in the fairy theme, disney has a fairy book series that my dd loves. Also try Judy Moody series, and both my dd and ds went through an a-z mystery phase.

The Little House on the Prairie series is hard to beat.

Orchard Crunchies are good - short chapter books with pictures. Our library has loads and both DDs loved them at this stage, they are a good transition between picture books and chapter books, and tend to be funny which also helps. If she likes ponies the Sheltie books by Peter Clover are also quite good and not too long. Again our library had loads of these.

lexcat · 10/02/2007 13:51

thanks for all your ideas I think What I'm really looking for is books that makes that transition from picture to chapter. I plan to have a really good look in my local library.

Look at amazon for The Witch's Dog. My 5yo got it yesterday, its for early readers and is part of a reading scheme.

There are pictures on every page, but quite a few sentences as well and I think it makes a good transition book.

Sophie Stories - Dick King Smith. dd is just reading some of the Ladybird Disney books and still loves her Mog books

pinkbubble · 10/02/2007 19:37

My DD likes reading Naughty Amelia Jane!

pinkbubble · 10/02/2007 19:42

Do you mean a free reader from sch or just at home? At my DDs school they dont become free readers until at least yr4, but they do have a really good reading scheme which also includes non fiction books as well- last week DD bought home a book all about the City of Bath, she really enjoyed it and at the back og the book was a recipe on how to make a Sally Lunns cake which I helped her make and she loved it! DD is 6 by the way!

lexcat · 10/02/2007 20:20

she does colour book bands at school, on the last level and finding the books easy. At home she can read most things and if she's not sure of words, 99% of the time she can work it out. She always loved books and started reading early, and is the top reader in her class. But more average in other things.
Just not got the concentration for long books.

Flat Stanley, I bought this book for DD today in Watertones. They have a sale on selected books- this book is larger than average but DD loved it and it had good words in it that would challenge her.
She also likes The Horrid Henry books!
