The The Eyre Affair by Jasper FForde on Amazon
here

It is light, witty and I laughed out loud. You can do character spotting from various well known books, as in this characters in books can be real.

The Times says:
'The reader is catapulted in and out of truth and imagination on a hectic, humorous and neatly constructed chase?

Then if you enjoy it, there are 4 (or5) Thursday Next books. Then also the Nursury Crime Series (where they investigate things like was Humpty Dumpty murdered or just drunk when he fell off the wall.

Another vote for Jasper Fforde, here. And if you want a good biography, this one \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/War-Paint-Lindy-Woodhead/dp/1844080498/sr=1-2/qid=1170867656/ref=sr_1_2/202-5570966-9641457?ie=UTF8&s=books is all about lipstick} and has none of the things you want to avoid. And is a grand read.

ggg yes The Ladies Detective stories are lovely. Or how about good old Jane Austen? Both of these suggestions are books that you can get totally lost in for a couple of hours.

A Room with a View? Nice and romantic w/o being brainless, some very funny bits, and a good film to boot.

I second reading your way through Jane Austen. Fabulous fabulous narrative, really good stuff, but not I think going to be too distressing.
