Hi I am new to mumsnet and found your book club alomost straight away. What a great idea! What book should I be reading at the moment in order to join in the lastest discussions! I'm sorry but before reading some of the rules yesterday I blundered on in there with my own suggestions!! Whoops! Any way I would really appreciate some advice on which book/books to buy. Thanks

Hi Kim - welcome!

There are various discussions going on about several books that members suggest as Beetroot has pointed you towards.

We will shortly be having a new "Book of the Month" so watch this space!

Anything by Philippa Gregory. My favourites are the Little House and The Queens Fool.

Also Jill Mansell are good beach reads.

I read Fingersmith whch was reccomended on here and really enjoyed it.

Chinchilla · 12/06/2004 18:36

I'm reading 'The Queen's Fool' at the moment - it's very good. My favourite Philippa Gregory books are the 'Wideacre' trilogy. They are really good stories with a mystical twist. IMO, the best of her books by a long way.

Has anyone read the 'Cross Stitch' books by Diana Gabaldon? SO good and very addictive.

vict17 · 12/06/2004 18:37

I'm reading the latest Marian Keyes at the moment which is really good and I second the Jill Mansell suggestion further down the thread...

I loved the PG trilogy, read it ages ago but would def read again. Paulina simmons is a good read too.

Bettybloo · 12/06/2004 18:52

Chinchilla - I LOVE the Cross Stitch books! The first and third ones especially. Have you read the Lord John one? I'm waiting for the paperback on that one. Have you visited her website? (www.ladies of lallybroch.com) they're VERY devoted fans.
This is nothing to do with book club, but there's a new one out next week in my all time favourite series, the Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich. Heartilly recommended for light, very funny, sexy thrillers - but steer well clear of her novels cowritten with Charlette Hughes IMO.

is Outlander godd. Just looked in Amazon and thats the only cross stitch one they have. is it a series of books or one offs. IYSWIM

Bettybloo · 12/06/2004 19:00

Outlander is the first one - called Cross stitch in the Uk. I think it's wonderful - beautiful love story with rich historical detail and (this probably sounds off putting but honestly, its great- time travelling!)

Ok im a bit of a book addict and always prepared to try new authores so ill order it. Thankyou.

CP3 · 12/06/2004 19:02

Oooh wait a min one called Dragon fly has come up too????????????????????

Bettybloo · 12/06/2004 19:08

Dragonfly in Amber is the second one. They need to be read in order.
I found them the sort of book that you think about all the time when you're not reading them - they're not "literature" by any means but great characters in a really unputdownable story. Hope you enjoy it!

CP3 · 12/06/2004 19:12

Betty sounds like my sort of thing. Ill let you know how i get on with them. Have just started a new Phillippa Gregory one so will be a month or so. Thank you for your reccomendations

Kiml71 · 12/06/2004 19:20

Thanks for all your suggestions. I look forward to reading joining in your discussions.

CP3 This order for DG books:

Cross Stitch (Outlander in US)
Dragonfly in Amber
Voyager
Drums of Autumn
Thr Fiery Cross
6th (long-awaited) unpublished final book

Bettybloo - I am awaiting the Lord John book in paperback too! Not sure if it will be the same though, because I love the 'Jamie and Claire' love story aspect.

Bettybloo · 14/06/2004 00:09

Oh no! I didn't realise the next book would be the last!
I'm the same as you on the Lord John book - it's Jamie and Claire that I really love and the time aspect.

Chinchilla · 16/06/2004 20:37

BB - It was originally only meant to be a trilogy. Apparently, she got the America idea, and decided to do an extra three books based there.
