Peyton Place for vintage trash, also wonderful Valley of the Dolls

wurlywurly · 02/02/2007 11:32

anything by aribella weir, (is that trashy??)

lissielou · 02/02/2007 11:33

Lace, soooo trashy

decafskinnylatte · 02/02/2007 11:40

Also definitely Riders. Sadly, I came to Jilly Cooper late (well into my 20s). Could definitely have done with the education in my early teens (!).

franca70 · 02/02/2007 11:56

I read lots of virginia andrews' books when I was 16. really trash. However, there are some books that pretend to be highbrow that are soooo trashy as well...

MamaGrr · 02/02/2007 11:58

Ah yes, flowers in teh attic, its all coming back now

franca70 · 02/02/2007 12:08

lulumama · 02/02/2007 12:09

anything by jilly cooper.......!!!!! or jackie collins

is marian keyes trash?

Mercy · 02/02/2007 12:11

Snap Marina - I absolutely love Valley of the Dolls

choosyfloosy · 02/02/2007 12:13

Rivals by Jilly Cooper, I prefer it to Riders tbh.

Light a Penny Candle by Maeve Binchy. Wish she would do a sequel, I never wanted it to end. Especially as the ending was so pants.

Marian Keyes is trash IMO, but real good solid trash. Despite her posturing about how awful it is not to be taken seriously as an author.

mummycan · 02/02/2007 12:13

Pleasant Vices by Judy Astley - had me laughing out loud on the bus - you can read it an a couple of hours.

lulumama · 02/02/2007 12:16

does she really chooosy?

anyhoo, i would have to say then, hollywood wives, by Jackie Collins, Watermelon by Marian Keyes and Pandora by Jilly Cooper are my top three faves !

MamaGrr · 02/02/2007 12:28

I love Marian Keyes, I don't count her as trash

Yes, love Rivals too but Riders was my first JC read, so its a firm fave

ShowOfHands · 02/02/2007 12:32

Oh yes Light a Penny Candle, utter trash but requiring a sequel.

Also read the Virginia Andrews Flowers in the Attic series when I was 14ish and loved them at the time.

I'm too embarrassed to read trash now as I'm a librarian and my colleagues would feather and tar me. I do, however, read some of DH's fantasy fiction but I hide it in a proper book first.

choosyfloosy · 02/02/2007 14:35

Well, posturing is pushing it I suppose, she's v funny about it. But for example, she talks about Rachel's Holiday as 'a novel about recovering from drug addiction' and that it being described as 'forgettable froth' by a journalist showed that she hadn't read it. Hmmm. Perhaps trash is pushing it too! but it's light fiction with a head and a heart. Not art.

mamama · 02/02/2007 14:40

Another vote for Riders

Also, for easy reading, Marian Keyes & co - girly, light hearted reading. It's about all I can manage at the moment!

RosaLuxembourg · 02/02/2007 15:04

My favourite trash - but really good trash IYSWIM - is Georgette Heyer's Regency novels. Nothing like Sprig Muslin when you're tucked up in bed with a nasty cold.

hotandbothered · 02/02/2007 15:37

The Thorn Birds

CAMy · 02/02/2007 15:40

Yes to Valley of the Dolls, was glued to it at age 14 or so, also The Virgin Soldiers and The Carpetbaggers.

Also the Bond books.

compo · 02/02/2007 15:41

As soon as I saw the thread title I thought Jilly Cooper.
My personal fave is Polo.
Also Fiona Walker - Snap Happy, Well Groomed etc

fridascruffs · 02/02/2007 15:46

anothetr jc rider's fan, and georgettete heyer too.

JackieNo · 02/02/2007 15:57

I love the earlier Jilly Coopers - recently bought a copy of Imogen (whisked off to south of France by glamorous tennis player etc) in a charity bookshop, and enjoyed it all over again - probably hadn't read it since I was 14. Also the odd Judith Krantz, although I think I've given them all away now.

expatinscotland · 02/02/2007 16:00

Gotta be Sidney Sheldon's (RIP), 'Master of the Game'.

Dinosaur · 02/02/2007 16:02

Did anyone read the Poldark books? I loved them.

Earthymama · 02/02/2007 16:11

Definately Georgette Heyer, I want to be a spirited heroine!!

For modern day trash no-one beats Nora Roberts, and I love the TriLogies eg Black rose, Blue Dahlia, Red Lily. Pure escapism.

I've just discovered Laurel K Hamilton, sort of a Buffy vibe, and lots of fun and games!!
