Need something new to get my teeth into. I've read and love all robin hobb. Very much dislike game of thrones as too wordy and too much rape, misogny and sooo many names. Read the wheel of time series years ago, it was ok.. not too keen on very long series that never seem to end. What other books or series or authors do i need to look at?

CotL was first serialised then released as a one off book but the US publisher ordered another one so you can expect a new book in Spring.

LBOCS2 · 24/08/2016 14:04

I follow her on FB and she's just finished a sequel to CotL.

I was very excited about the excerpt from Rituals - it seems to have gone back on track and getting interesting again. Did you get it as part of the novella bundle they gave away? The other stories were good too, particularly the Ricky/Olivia road trip.

RavenQueen · 24/08/2016 14:42

I follow her on Facebook but for some reason she never pops up on my newsfeed? Unless it does and I miss it due to all the other gossip which appears on there, lol.

So what are you reading now? Im halfway through Betrayals and after this I'm going to start on Ilona Andrews - Kate Daniels Magic Binds

LBOCS2 · 24/08/2016 14:49

Well. I downloaded five books off the back of this thread. And then started rereading Riders by Jilly Cooper because I was inspired by the Olympics Grin

When I finish that I'm going to start Cold Magic by Kate Elliott, I think.

IPokeBadgers · 24/08/2016 14:53

I came on here to recommend Sarah J Maas - Throne of Glass series, but someone beat me to it. Think it is YA but was impressed with the writing and characters.

I bought the first one as a 99p Kindle book and thoroughly enjoyed it so paid for the next couple in the series (all on Kindle)....taking a break but about to start the fourth in the series.

Flowerfae · 24/08/2016 14:58

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley which is the story of King Arthur from Morgaine (Le fay's) point of view.

RavenQueen · 24/08/2016 15:12

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Black Dagger Brotherhood

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/08/2016 15:44

I think Kelley Armstrong can be a bit hit or miss - I loved Bitten, Stolen and the one where she has the twins, but I was less impressed by Paige's crappy non-magic in Dime Store Magic. And then I got really annoyed with Savannah in the later ones. I think Kelley Armstrong really suffers from falling into just telling you what has happened instead of 'showing' it. I am liking Cainsville, though.

I have now read 3 Robin Hobb trilogies and the first 2 Cold Magic books based on this thread. Blush

MachiKoro · 24/08/2016 15:55

What about Tad Williams?
The Memory, Sorrow, Thorn series (begins with the Dragonbone Chair) is fantasy, the Motherland series is more SF/Fantasy. Both v good.

MachiKoro · 24/08/2016 15:56

Otherland, not motherland!!

NauticalDisaster · 24/08/2016 19:00

LBOCS2 yes, I received the novella as part of the pre-order giveaway. KA is really generous with her fans, both in giveaways and her interaction.

Have you read Devil May Care form the Led Astray collection? It is the Patrick/Seana story.

In terms of reading right now I am picking up Neil Gaiman's American Gods tomorrow from the library, with the series coming out next year I thought I should reread it.

pointythings · 24/08/2016 19:34

Raven I do enjoy the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, but in my head they come more under romance than under fantasy. But that's a whole other thread. I do really like the way J.R Ward handles same sex relationships.

RavenQueen · 24/08/2016 19:58

I suppose they are more sex, sex and sex!!! Zsadist is my favourite though, lol

LBOCS2 · 25/08/2016 01:24

She really is, it's lovely - she's responded to my comments on her posts before, which was extremely exciting!

I haven't read that one, I'll definitely search it out. I've preordered her last WotO book (Otherworld Chills?) just for completion's sake. The only thing I would say is that occasionally maybe she's too generous - I sometimes get a bit annoyed that I've paid for a whole book when I've read 95% of the stories in it. Which is ridiculous really - I definitely recognise that she should be paid for her work.

BloodyDifficultWoman · 25/08/2016 01:27

Marking place...

SeaEagleFeather · 25/08/2016 17:21

Ursula Le Guin, Left Hand of Darkness

Tanith Lee.

Iain M Banks - Inversions. Reads like a standalone fantasy, though it's part of the Culture series.

Lois McMaster Bujold, The Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls. Excellent and well written.

Second Robin Mckinley, The Hero and the Crown is adolescent fiction but it's lovely. Sunshine is adult and a great vampire novel.
Also second C S Friedman - a different take on magic; and Patricia McKillip

very old, very strange: Gene Wolfe, the Shadow of the Torturer series.

Neil Gaiman

Worth taking a look at the Fantasy Masterworks series to see if you like any of them.

SeaEagleFeather · 25/08/2016 22:20

Octavia Butler too.

kesstrel · 26/08/2016 20:45

Barbara Hambly.

BlackIsTheNewBlack · 03/09/2016 18:05

The Fionavar trilogy by Guy Gavriel Kay is one of my favourite series of fantasy books. I don't know why but it's never mentioned on these threads. I've re read it many times over the last 20 years .

VestalVirgin · 28/09/2016 17:30

Dragon Bones by Patricia Briggs
The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison

There's some other books by Patricia Briggs that are also good, but the Hurog duology (Dragon Bones and Dragon Blood) is my favourite.

scaryteacher · 26/10/2016 16:36

I love The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher, ds (21) got me into them. I also love the Deborah Harkness All Souls trilogy...they are fast becoming my comfort reads. Ds is really into the Ben Aaronovitch series and the Alex Verus series as well. He also rates Django Wexler Shadow campaigns series.

He is also getting into Guy Gavriel Kay, and goes through my shelves tutting that he didn't realise I had a lot of those (even though I've had some longer than he has been alive!)

Felascloak · 26/10/2016 22:06

Mark Lawrence prinice of thorns.
I really liked Firethorn and Wildfire by Sarah Micklem but it doesn't seem like she's going to finish the trilogy Sad
And I enjoyed the Myrrens Gift trilogy by Fiona Walker.
Robin Hobb is the boss though. Love her.
