Hi Everyone. As we are a little over half way through the year I was wondering what everyone's favourite book was, so far this year? I have read 16 books this year and I have to say that the one that is head and shoulders ahead of all the others I have read is Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. I absolutely LOVED this book and the fact that it's based on the true story of Agnes Magnusdottir (the last woman to be executed in Iceland) made it even more of a draw. I loved it so much that I am seriously contemplating re-reading it again today. Smile

This has been rather a good reading year so far. I have read a few duds but have had a few excellent reads as well which included a few rereads (on audible) of Harry Potter and The Northern Lights. The list for other best (not in any particular order are):

  1. Americannah - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (audio)
  2. Company of Liars - Karen Maitland (audio)
  3. 11.22.63 - Stephen King (audio)
  4. The Stand - Stephen King
  5. Silverthorn - Raymone Feist
  6. Noughts and Crosses - Malorie Blackman

I am currently listening the The Golem and the Djinni by Helene Wecker and suspect it will be added to the above list.

Love a list! My favourite books of the year so far, with Twelve Years a Slave and Far from the Tree being the top two, such amazing thought provoking books. All non-fiction! I have read some good fiction as well but they just weren't as good as these four. 😄

  • Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup.

  • Far from the Tree by Andrew Solomon

  • How to Talk so Kids will Listen and Listen so Kids will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish (a Mumsnet classic)

  • Farewell Kabul by Christina Lamb

I have read all the CJ Sansom books this year and loved them all. Started with the Shardlake series and then Winter in Madrid and just finishing last few pages of Dominion. Thought I wouldn't enjoy Dominion as don't care for anything bordering on fantasy but this is quite different, the possibility of such happenings send shivers down your spine. Loved All The Light You Cannot See and another is the Gift of Rain by Tan Twan Eng.,

OO, such a difficult one.

Either:
Absolute Pandemonium by Brian Blessed
or
Silkworm/Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith
or
Moving by Jenny Eclair

I plundered this thread for some holiday reading ideas and I have not been disappointed! I loved The Outrun, and I have just read The Light between Oceans, which was heartbreaking and possibly my favourite book so far this year.

Another vote for All the light we cannot see, also Slade House and A God in ruins.

Now off to buy The light between oceans, thanks tigerdog and others.

Currently ploughing through On Golden Hill, hope the twists are worth it.

Another very strong contender for my top five this year is The Trouble with Goats and Sheep by Joanna Cannon. Just finished it this afternoon. The characters will stay with me for a long time.

A God in Ruins. Still lingering.

Also The Martian, but via the Audible audio book. Best. Audiobook. Ever. Still searching for something that comes close.

I cannot quite decide between The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison, and the Imperial Radch Series by Ann Leckie.
