Which books do you find yourself returning to when you want to snuggle in something familiar? The book version of stew and dumplings? :)
Mine is Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, particularly the City Watch storyline. While despairing over the whole Brexit fiasco I found myself thinking "Sam Vimes should weigh in on this" and ended up re-reading them all.

OP posts:

Currently, The Chronicles of St Mary's.

A decade or so ago, it was Anne McCaffrey.

Sadik · 21/07/2016 22:05

Generally Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer, then more recently Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunter books.

buckingfrolicks · 21/07/2016 22:08

PG Wodehouse.

Or Austen

iamEarthymama · 22/07/2016 05:35

First port of call is Georgette Heyer, never fails.

Terry Pratchett here too, for the same reasons as OP.

Now for my guilty secret, Nora Roberts, writing as J D Robb. Blush
Formulaic, yes; romantic, yes but funny and heart warming too.

Though when I was in a very low place recently, I listened to Robert Galbraith's Cormoran Strike series and it definitely helped so they can be added to the list.

Agree with the St Marys books.

I've recently rediscovered Molesworth, which I read a lot when I was young. It still makes me smile.

I agree with Biggins about Barbara Pym. Lovely and soothing. I also find any Elizabeth Jane Howard very comforting. I'm Blush to say I've not tried Georgette Hayer but think I'm going to after all the mentions on this thread. Lord know we all need some calming comfort at the moment!

OttoTheOnly · 28/07/2016 09:20

Tales of the City series. I love them all and have read them numerous times over the last twenty plus years.
Also, The Outsider. I found it in the school library one rainy lunchtime and it's been my favourite book ever since.
