Good storytelling though rather formulaic I'm afraid.

Just finished it - I had guessed who did it although I wasn't sure I was right until I got to the 'reveal' in the book!

The story kept me involved right up the end. Even though the accuracy of Amy's condition was altered to make the story work - the author does say that she used a lot of artistic licence - it still seemed believable.

Thank you again for my copy.

Thank you for the free copy Mumsnet.

I am half way through this and I am enjoying it. Its a quick and easy bedtime read. In particular the switching between characters is a good way of keeping the readers interest up.

Its not keeping me awake desperately trying to get to the end (and I think I have a good idea who the attacker is) but nevertheless I'd recommend it and pass it on for a bit of light reading.

I shall report back further when I finish it.

This was a pacy and enjoyable read; I imagine - and hope - it will be a commercial success for the author.

I really liked the strong message in the book that Amy's "seduction" involved coercion and abuse of power/position. I realised that it is such a relief when you come across that in a crime novel. As a reader, you hand yourselves over to an author, and I can't tell you how many times I've felt a real sense of betrayal because the author's attitudes have made a book pretty much unreadable for me, and/or left a nasty taste after finishing. I found myself warming to Holly Seddon.

I really loved many of Holly Seddon's similes. I also found the chapters written from Amy's perspective very effective: the author's construction of the hopeful immediacy of the teenager's consciousness rubbing against the reader's knowledge of the reality was really well-handled. Personally, I found it genuinely upsetting - but in a way that made me care for the character, want to read on, and reflect more generally on adolescence.

I would have liked to have spent more time with many of the characters. I hope Holly Seddon gets the time and space to write more in the future.

Update to my earlier review.Just finished this book - it was enjoyable but it does feel a bit similar to a few recent books. Feel there are a few too many books out there about women being victims of violence - not necessarily a criticism but I think i would like to read about something else now.

That said, of it's type it is well written and pacey. I struggled to like any of the characters - and as others have said - I guessed whodunnit fairly quickly. I will pass it on to friends who I'm sure will enjoy. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either.

Thank you mumsnet for giving me the opportunity to read and review it

I have just finished reading 'Try Not To Breathe' by Holly Seddon and found the book to be a strange mixture of easy reading and psychological thriller without loads of gory bits. Like many readers, I felt early on in the story that I had guessed who the culprit was that committed the crime against Amy, and that Alex was a fairly predictable alcoholic journalist with screw-ups in her past. That said, the story was easy to follow, the author did well to give voices to the few central characters and their perspectives on life since the attack. A decent story that doesn't require too much thought , that doesn't test the reader's crime-solving abilities too much and can be read quickly - the short chapters would also make it good for those who only have a few minutes here and there to read.

Thank you to Mumsnet for my free copy of this book; I will pass the book on for others to enjoy.

Thank you mumsnet for my free copy of this book. I enjoyed it and whizzed though it very quickly. Partly because it's an easy read but mainly because I was keen to find out what happened! I had a pretty good idea who the attacker was but even so that didn't spoil the ending - I quite liked being able to piece things together rather than have a big reveal that I could never have guessed. Main character being an alcoholic with a broken marriage seemed a bit samey at first but I think she was written in a very different way and there was no sense of her being an unreliable narrator like GIrl on the train so I don't think the two can be compared. I'm not a huge thriller reader but when I do read them I like them to be like this - pacey, interesting and not too gruesome. It was a perfect holiday read and I'd definitely read another of Holly Seddons novels.

SammyF1976 · 06/09/2016 07:57

Good plot, easy to read, new author for me which I always enjoy too. However, not one that I would stick in my top ten.

minsmum · 07/09/2016 13:25

Thank you Mumsnet for this book. I enjoyed it like many others I did work out who it was but it didn't spoil it for me. I read it very quickly because I didn't want to put it down. I would read more from this author

CopperPan · 09/09/2016 10:19

This was very well paced and would be great for a holiday read, I read it quite quickly. The story gripped me immediately and it is a good page turner. I liked the way the story is told from various points of view.

scaredofthecity · 09/09/2016 18:59

This was easy to read and I enjoyed the ride, but also a bit forgettable and not the best written. But for a debut, not bad!

LindseyandMatthew · 15/09/2016 09:33

This is a really easy to read book which I literally couldn't put down. I, like many others guessed the ending eat before the end but it still didn't take away from the story. I would definitely read more by the author

danson16 · 26/09/2016 14:05

I am really impressed with this book, the story is fascinating to read, whenever I had the chance I sat to read it. The plot has a twist through out and although I thought I knew who had done it, I had to read it to know for sure. This is a very good book, would recommend it definitely.

voyager50 · 26/09/2016 15:29

I had correctly guessed the person who attacked Amy!

I liked the way the book ended without leaving any loose ends.

Thanks again.
