I just finished reading Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier and really really enjoyed it. Think I liked it more than Rebecca.

So can anyone recommend any similar type stuff that I might enjoy for my next read?

My Cousin Rachel and Frenchman's Creek (pirate adventure) are both great

I love audio books on a long journey and recently I listened to My Cousin Rachel, narrated by Jonathan Pryce. It was absolutely amazing.

I'd read it when I was a teenager but it had so much more impact now and I think that was partly due to JP narrating it.

Have you read any Mary Stewart books? My laptop's playing up so I can't do links, but have a look at The Ivy Tree. They are all brilliant, though. Don't be put off by the covers. Mary Stewart is very underrated, in my opinion.

Mary Stewart is completely ace. Touch Not the Cat is a book that I first read when I was a teenager and have re-read countless times since, each time I enjoy it just as much! I started with my Mum's copy and she has read it many times too. There are a lot of hers I could recommend.

Frenchman's Creek is better than Jamaica Inn I think Aubery makes me come over all unnecessary

And I adore Mary Stewart! I'm in for a chat. The only thing that sticks is the repetition from all the heroines of 'men are basically better', even in the face of said heroines being extremely feisty and effective. It's like the internal monologue of the 50s, despite the reality.

My favourites are probably Madam Will You Talk, Airs above the Ground (the bit at the end when Neapolitan Petra goes home always make me snivel), Touch not the Cat, and one of the Greek ones, My Brother Michael probably. I do have a soft spot for Thornyhold too.

I loved The House on the Strand and My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier too.
