recommend something cheery or lighthearted for our book club

Lately we have read lots of long, harrowing, depressing, albeit great books such as we need to talk about Kevin, all the light we cannot see, in true blood etc. Please recommended something lighthearted, happy and easy to read for us. We all take turns in choosing but all feel we need something a bit more uplifting after our recent selections.

Thanks in advance.

Try - A man called Ove

Not without sadness but not harrowing in any way, a lovely book.

Miss Bun the Bakers Daughter D Stevenson
A very light and silly story with wonderful characters

The little,Paris Book Shop. A man has a book shop on a barge on the River. Great characters, and a rather unusual book.

Guernsey Literary potato peel society. Another interestingly unusual book. A little bit of sadness in the middle but sensitively handled

The Frozen Lake. E Edmonson. I love her writing, a great story. Teller.

The way we live now. Trollope. I think this is his best book. Huge cast of wonderful characters.

I was going to say the Guernsey book, loved that.

The Girl Who Saved The King Of Sweden is hilarious.

The Humans, Matt Haig, is very good too.

TeaMeBasil · 11/07/2016 10:57

I was about to suggest Ove too! Funny, sweet, lovely.

The Guernsey one was really nice too.

Alison May's Midsummer Dreams and Sweet Nothing are modern day adaptions of 2 of Shakespeare's comedies. They're very funny, light and romantic and definitely not harrowing! I read them on kindle but believe they're out in paperback too now.

Definitely a fun read.

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson. It has a Forrest Gump feel.

SnugglySnerd · 13/07/2016 16:19

I'm afraid I can't suggest anything but watching with interest as I only seem to choose miserable books and could do with some light relief!

The Martian - I loved being in the hero, Mark Watney's head. Such a positive character.

PartiallyStars · 13/07/2016 16:29

I'm going to suggest Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day.

Any of Hamish Macbeth or Agatha Raisin

Diary of a Nobody by George Grossmith. Normally I hate comic novels, but this was hilarious, and my book group loved it too. Imagine a Victorian David Brent..........

TaraCarter · 19/07/2016 23:15

Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons.

Something or anything by Saki (penname of H.H. Munro). The whole of his Reginald stories are free on Kindle.

Second The little Paris Bookshop. Am reading it at the moment and enjoying it

BikeRunSki · 30/07/2016 20:06

The Uncommon Reader - Alan Bennett

Short and funny, and the story will appeal to book club readers

JammieDodgem · 31/07/2016 00:05

Came on to recommend Ove too!

The Rosie Project was a success for us too, as was Potato Peel, Summer of the Bear was sad but not traumatising

MadameMayberry · 01/08/2016 19:09

I second the Rosie Project. One of my favourite book club reads. I Capture the Castle was a good read too.
