has anyone read any of the books in this series? have just finished one of them and really didn't know what I made of it - would be interested in others opinions.....

Have read all four of them and thought they were wonderful; all charming reads with such a refreshing outlook. Loved them.

littleweed, what was it about No1 LDA that you're not sure about?

oliveoil · 03/06/2004 09:07

ooooh, I did a thread on this somewhere and it was a mixed response. But I bought and read the first 2 and the other 2 are gathering dust until I have a minute to myself to read them.

Very easy reads but comforting iyswim.

Think my thread is in the book section somewhere.

Just finished the first two, and have ordered the other two from the library. I thought they were brilliant - very evocative and beautifully written.

littleweed · 03/06/2004 09:14

I suppose it was just so 'whimscical' for want of a better word - in a way it reminded me of teh old 'Miss read' books - (anyone remember those?) - portraying a bygone era. its not that i didn't enjoy it - made a refreshing change from blood and guts detective books -

There is a long thread on this from a couple of months ago. I loved the two I've read and found them very evocative of life in the region (I have done research just over the border in South Africa in an area where most people are Batswana).

Am reading Tears Of A Giraffe just now, recently read No. 1 Ladies...and, like Sooz, found them really refreshing. I hate ChickLit and that is all that seem to be written at the moment (Marian Keyes not included as her books are funny and genuine.) The way No.1 Ladies was written, almost like each chapter was a short story with the thread of Mma Ramotswe tying them altogether.

Loved the characters, and even hearing a story from Africa for a change. Totally charming and heart-warming from start to end. For a change I finished the book and felt really comforted.

To think I avoided these books as I thought, set in Africa it wouldn't interest me. How wrong I was!

Absolutely loved the four I've read, have tried to pace myself through them though (somehow it seemed wrong to read one after another). They are written with such love and respect for Africa and its people (and not just Mma Ramotswe), and yes they are charming, but you still see glimpses of the reality of life in contemporary Africa (AIDS for instance). I think they are much more than pleasant little reads. Well worth a try. I

Have read two of them - No 1 Detectives Agency and Kalahari school for typing - first found them unbearably whimsical, but then the charm grew on me.

Kiml71 · 10/06/2004 14:20

I have just read No.1 Ladies Dectective Agency and thought it was a gentle easy read with beautiful descriptions of Africa (having never been there I can only imagine!). I have to admit though I haven't had the overwhelming urge to dive into the next one which I bought some time ago.

SoupDragon · 10/06/2004 14:26

I enjoyed the first 2 but have since been put off by the photo of the author...

OldieMum · 10/06/2004 14:53

Aw, it's a sweet little photo. He sounds really cuddly, too.
