i LOVED the book read it 4 times on honeymoon and cried each time, now jackson is close to announcing cast im a bit worried. how will he handle the more delicate scenes without it being icky, how will he handle suzys narrative, the intricacies of the relationships. will he botch one of my fave books of all time?

Oh crikey Nora
Yes... cannot imagine it being a film, but Peter Jackson is a casting wizard (hopefully)
the book is so much about individuals and their impact on each other...
eeks movie makers nightmare
I hope he pulls it off, it would be a tremendous film if it was done properly..

a quote from PJ here curiously he and his writer have bought the rights themselves, with their own money...

Jackson told Variety the most difficult part of adapting "The Lovely Bones" will be figuring out how to convey Susie in Heaven. "It's cleverly not described that well in the book, because Alice wanted your imagination to do the work and decide what Susie's heaven looks and feels like," Jackson told Variety. "We will have to show something on film. It has to be somehow ethereal and emotional, but it can't be hokey."

I hope they are raw and real at the very least

i think that he will genuinley try to adapt the book and he sees it as a labour of love, but i saw heaven as a school yard and susie looking down as almost like looking thru a window. but the rape/murder scene is one of the most heartbreaking, but important scenes in the book (i sobbed uncontrollably thruout it) the breakdown of her parents marriage, the fact that lyndsay is "susies sister"... these are all major factors in the book. when ruth and susie "merge". he can either create a masterpiece or wreck one of the best books ever. and who would he cast? on imdb theres a lot of talk about dakota fanning as susie and kiefer sutherland as mr harvey, who would you cast?

Oh, God, please, please, please don't let anyone put Renee Zellwegger anywhere near this film.

Please.

Piffle · 20/01/2007 22:06

cast of unknowns or lesser known esp Susie and her parents/family
it cannot reek of Hollywood it would be wrong
I don't see Dakota Fanning as Susie TBH

Piffle · 20/01/2007 22:07

HM I am so with you on that one

Piffle · 20/01/2007 22:08

PJ casted Kate Winslet it Heavely Creatures many moons ago in NZ film
I wonder if she'll be approached at all....

I too loved the book - did anyone read "The Collector" by John Fowles - written in the 70's I think, but a similar theme, an art student abducted by a misfit. So well, written and I felt sympathy for both characters.

lissielou · 20/01/2007 22:11

see, thats it dakota fanning is just too... young for this role. susie has to be on the cusp between child and woman.

but no to renee (pmsl)

Have read "Never Let Me Go" and hated it. Have just finished "The Remains Of The Day" and hated that too. Don't think I'll bother with another of his; I find him very "cold". I liked "The Lovely Bones" though! And Hunkermunker - you are so right. In fact, Renee whatsername should never be allowed to make another film, ever -sooooo painful on the eyes!

lissielou · 20/01/2007 22:40

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 22:47

I hated this book.

Isn't life depressing enough as it is?

Now a film?

Let me just pull out some Coldplay CDs and hang myself.
