How did I not know this about The Stand?

I have a copy from 1978. It is my all time favourite book.

Why did I not know that it was released as an abridged version? I've just discovered that there are about 300 pages missing that are included in a version released in 1990. Shock

I feel like I've stepped into an alternate reality - how did I not know this?

Is there anything else I'm missing, any secret books that SK wrote that I've somehow not come across?

Pony there's a great version of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon read by Anne Heche. Duma Key read by John Slattery is pretty good and I love the DT series read by Frank Muller but he sadly died before he'd finished so the rest are done by someone else. I've got a version of Rose Madder read by Blair Brown and SK himself. She's very good but SK isn't as good. Still worth a listen though.

There's also a really good Lisey's Story but I haven't got it to hand and I can't for the life of me remember who read it.

Ok, just found this very handy list and Lisey's Story was read by Mare Winningham. I desperately need to find some of these!! So far I've only listened to what I've been able to get from iBooks and the selection isn't great.

IT read by Steven Weber?! Yes please!!

PonyoLovesHam · 20/06/2016 18:15

Wow, thank you Lettuce! I have made a note of all of those... Where to start!
Interesting about SK's readings not being as good as other people's, makes sense though really (as he's an author not an actor).

PonyoLovesHam · 20/06/2016 18:17

Sissy Spacek reading Carrie! Shock

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/06/2016 18:26

'Rage' only available in out of print formats now, I think.

PseudoBadger · 20/06/2016 19:04

"as you can't flip back as easily as an actual book, which is something i think I'd need to do a lot with SK's books. "

Ha ha I'm just beginning 'salem's Lot (expecting to find out about 1/3 of the way in that I did read it years ago) and have already flicked back 3 times in the first 20 pages (on kindle) Grin

PonyoLovesHam · 20/06/2016 20:32

Grin Badger! Do you find it really annoying doing it on kindle? I was reading one of the Game of Thrones books on mine (after reading the first ones in paperback) and I gave up because trying to flip was annoying me so much!

Catzpyjamas · 20/06/2016 20:44

If anyone wants to read Rage, Amazon have the 1987 Edition of the Bachman Books which has it.

GiraffesAndButterflies · 20/06/2016 23:27

Cujo, that's another one I cannot cannot read since becoming a parent. Awful.

pinkunicornsarefluffy · 20/06/2016 23:40

I love The Stand, read the unabridged version a few times. and I have watched the 4 part mini series several times and have the DVD. There are several changes from the book though. I think they are now making it into three films so can't wait.

I love The Mist, but was horrified by the film version of it, the ending really disturbed me :(. I've read they're also making a mini series of it.

The short story about the toy monkey with the cymbals me too!

Carrie was the first SK I ever read, when I was 12, followed by Firestarter and Saloms Lot.

puffylovett · 21/06/2016 00:21

It's been that long since I read Salems Lot and Pet Cemetery that I can't actually remember the storyline Blush

Definitely need to revisit all his books.

Did anyone like James Herbert too? I loved them. Between him, SK and David Eddings, I saw my teen years through. Seems like so long ago now.

AllegraWho · 21/06/2016 00:37

Lisey's Story is - aside from the Dark Tower - my absolute favourite.

The Regulators and Desperation came out on the same day, and I bought them both and read them
one straight after the other.

Thought I was going mad... Still can't quite figure out why he'd do that. Maybe he went a bit mad...

Dark Tower - he rewrote Gunslinger at one point, to tie in better with the rest. I much prefer the original.

HerRoyalFattyness · 21/06/2016 07:40

puffy I was given loads of James Herbert books, they are sat in my cupboard unread by me so far. I will get round to reading them eventually!

puffylovett · 21/06/2016 10:40

allegra I loved the regulators and desperation. Can't remember the story though, I just remember that I loved them both Grin

Willow2016 · 21/06/2016 13:03

Ooh I like James Herbet too got quite a few on my shelves plus a couple I still need to read. Never enough time!

Also reading my way though Dean Koonz books at the moment, like his mix of real science and 'what if'? and paranormal. His characters are always really well done, you can really relate to them (plus his baddies are often just 'normal' people on the face of it with a deplorable side to them) Actually makes you pretty scared of what science may be capable of in the not to distant future Shock

Must get a photo of my bookshelves too Smile

Started Bazzar of Bad Dreams ages ago - that car freaked me out! Stopped reading that story cos of the kids in it, will get back to it...Hmm

Willow2016 · 21/06/2016 13:04

Aww Cujo, felt so sorry for him but cried my eyes out at the end! Glad they changed the ending in the film Smile

YoGatoradeMeBitch · 21/06/2016 13:45

Constant Reader and James Herbert fan here. Pet Cemetery was my first SK read at 13. I know I wouldn't be able to read it again as a parent. The blade across the back of the ankle at the end.... it still makes me shudder.

My all time favourite book is Fluke by James Herbert. In fact I recently passed it on to my 11 year old DD. Admittedly the only of my Herbert collection that I can pass on to her at the moment!

Thanks to the PP for the Amazon link. I've been wanting to re-read Rage but not seen it in the usual charity shops I use to get my book fix.

TitsTingle · 21/06/2016 14:51

Domain by James Herbert scared the absolute crap out of me as a teen yet every 3 years or so I still go back and read it again Hmm. Also really liked Shrine everytime I eat a steak though I think about the man choking and his last thoughts were that the steak was growing in his throat. -shudder-

CalmItKermitt · 21/06/2016 16:02

For me, JH is SK-lite.

I do love Fluke though and The Magic Cottage.

Dean Koontz is good too. My favourite is Watchers.

pinkunicornsarefluffy · 21/06/2016 16:13

I used to read everything that James Herbert wrote, but stopped several years ago. I loved The Rats trilogy, especially Domain and recently bought all 3 on kindle to reread. I also liked Moon and The Magic Cottage.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/06/2016 16:55

I think James Herbery is vastly inferior to King. It's mostly just schlock and lacks King's characterisation and ability to get you right in the heart and pull.

CalmItKermitt · 21/06/2016 17:09

Totally agree Remus.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/06/2016 17:13

Just noticed my typo. Herbery is a great name! :)

puffylovett · 21/06/2016 20:01

I totally agree too Remus, but it doesn't stop me enjoying them! No one beats the King.

yougatorade my parents never passed James Herbert down to me, I nicked them out my dads wardrobe when I was about 11 or so Grin
The sex scenes were a bit of an eye opener at that age Grin

TitsTingle · 21/06/2016 20:22

Yes no one comes close to King, I did enjoy his sons book NOS 4A2, but couldn't get on with Heart Shaped box or The Fireman.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/06/2016 20:27

Not read 'The Fireman' but none of Joe Hill's others did much for me. I found 'Heart Shaped Box' slightly less terrible than 'Horns' (ridiculous) and the vampire one (which I can remember nothing about, other than that I didn't like it).
