From the Sunday Times bestselling author of That Girl From Nowhere comes an emotional and gripping new novel.

Do you ever wonder if you’ve lived the life you were meant to?

In 1988, two eight-year-old girls with almost identical names and the same love of ballet meet for the first time. They seem destined to be best friends for ever and to become professional dancers. Years later, however, they have both been dealt so many cruel blows that they walk away from each other into very different futures – one enters a convent, the other becomes a minor celebrity. Will these new, ‘invisible’ lives be the ones they were meant to live, or will they only find that kind of salvation when they are reunited twenty years later?

While writing When I Was Invisible, Dorothy rediscovered her love for music – especially 80s tunes. Tell us which three songs make up the soundtrack of your life to win £50 iTunes voucher!

your latest trick - DP and I's favourite track from the Brothers in Arms album by Dire Straits. Can't listen to it without it taking me back to lazy sunday afternoons doing nothing but lie next to him just listening to music.

teardrops by Womack and Womack - THE tune for my best friend and I. We always hotfooted it onto the dance floor and this song reminds me of her and our enduring friendship of over 30 years.

children by Robert Miiles. Beautiful tune.

LizKeen · 30/04/2016 09:50

Hard to narrow it to three. And these songs aren't really greatvsongs either, but when I listen to them I get a really strong sense of memory.

Spice girls Who do you think you are. Primary school. I had a red maxi dress and DM boots. I thought I was Geri Halliwell, despite looking nothing like her. :o

Shaggy It wasn't me. This song takes me back to my early teens.

Alesha Dixon Breathe slow. This song was playing on the radio when I was giving birth to DD1. As in, in the actual labour room. I didn't even realise it until a few weeks later when I heard the song and it was like having a flashback. It transported me back there.

dancemom · 30/04/2016 10:02

Sylvia's Mother by Dr Hook - instantly brings me back to long car journeys to visit family and my parents choice of music for the drive.

You oughta know by Alanis Morisette - my first foray into angst as a teenager, I could sing the entire jagged little pill album by heart and would do so in my head to get me through the tedious hours of shelf stacking at my first part time supermarket job!

That Boy is Mine by Brandy & Monica - I was the only one of my friends to be into RnB so when I was with them it was all dance music but then I would go home and put on En Vogue, TLC, Destinys Child and these were my theme songs!

BadlyWrittenPoem · 30/04/2016 12:01

Have you seen my childhood by Michael Jackson
Who am I by Casting Crowns
Blessed be Your Name by Tree63

Givemecoffeeplease · 30/04/2016 12:43

Oasis Whatever. The sound of being 14.

Yazoo Only You. Amazing lyrics and a wonderful song.

Ahhhh I love music.

DrCoconut · 30/04/2016 12:57

So many to choose from but for early in life I will go for its a sin by the pet shop boys. It reminds me of school and shopping with my mum (it was on the radio a lot). Next is song for live by Extreme. I was crazy about them and this charity single just encapsulated a lot of feelings, it is very of its time. It's my life by Bon Jovi gets number 3. It came out as I was about to leave a abusive relationship, though I didn't know it until the day I snapped and went. Again, it was on the radio as I travelled home to my family. "I ain't gonna live forever, I just want to live while I'm alive" summed that day, possibly the best days work I ever did, up perfectly.

DrCoconut · 30/04/2016 12:58

Stupid auto correct, that should say song for love not live!

EyesOfABlueDog · 30/04/2016 14:43

So hard to pick just 3, but here goes! Grin

Love Street - The Doors Growing up in the US in the 70s, I inherited my aunt's record collection. This was the B-side to Hello,I Love You & I preferred it & played it endlessly.

Rio - Duran Duran - my favourite band as a teenager (& now). I was not allowed to join the fan club (even with my own money Angry & will never forget the excitement of receiving the Rio album for my birthday. The opening music of the song immediately transports me back to being a teenager. Love.

You Are The One - a-ha - my son was born by elective section to this.Such happy, happy memories.

Muddlewitch · 30/04/2016 15:46

Wind of Change by the Scorpions is the first song I can remember really listening to and feeling moved by as I was at primary school and still vividly remember the teacher talking to us and watching the news in the classroom as the Berlin Wall came down.

In My Life by the Beatles always make think of my children and what a long road it has been for us as a family, and how I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

Read All About It by Emilie Sande makes me think of my wonderful DS1 and his battles with his mental health. At the time it was out I was fighting for all I was worth to get him help and ended up taking the local authority to court to get an appropriate school place. This song always takes me straight back to that time, I don't know how we got through it when I look back, it was the hardest time of my life.

UptownFunk00 · 30/04/2016 17:56

Bohemian Rhapsody Queen - it's such a different song there has never been a song before or after quite like it

UptownFunk00 · 30/04/2016 18:00

Bohemian Rhapsody Queen - it's such a different song there has never been a song before or after quite like it and the lyrics speak of such torment.

Seven Nation Army White Stripes - came out when something not that nice happened to me - the lyrics spoke to me to not give up and not let anyone get me down - it's upsets me still to hear it now but reminds me non of it was my fault and I dealt with it well.

Crazy Gnarls Barkley - comes up time and time again. Speaks of someone trying to tell another not to make mistakes that they did. The lyrics really speak to me.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 30/04/2016 18:21

So many. I have a Desert Island playlist that rarely changes (10 songs) but if I have to narrow that list to 3 defining ones:

This Is The Day: The The. Because once, a million years ago, I walked into a bar, looked at a boy and thought "this is what I'm here for. Things most definitely did "fall into place".

Perfect Day- Lou Reed Because once I went down to a river (there's a sneaky 4th one slipping in there Wink) and then drank sangria in a park. (There may also have been a MN user name (or 2) in there somehow...) Then Later.....

Angie: The Rolling Stones- Because it's never "time to say goodbye"

And yes, they are all about the same person, and no, it's not dp. Smile.

MummyBtothree · 30/04/2016 19:18

Travis - Why does it always rain on me.

FeelingSmurfy · 30/04/2016 23:54

I get knocked down, but I get up again - basically the background music for my whole life, I don't need 3!

duckyisback · 01/05/2016 06:21

Ooohh I have so many to pick from.

I'd say social distortion 'don't take me for granted'. I used to play this song on repeat all the time and loved it, it brings back so many memories.

IAmAPaleontologist · 01/05/2016 09:54

I have no idea! Different songs for different times I think.

Bruce Springsteen is now long trips in the car with the kids as dh plays it constantly having been brought up on Bruce and all the kids sing along.

Dh and I were pissing ds1 off by being so embarrassing last night as I'd jsut unearthed my old Oasis "What's the Story..." album and we were singing and dancing Grin.

I don't really know about the rest. Barbie Girl is daft nights one Guide camping trip, Country Roads is student days helping out at big Scouting events. Other John Denver is curling up in bed as a child. Cat Stevens is my mother. The Saw Doctors are my first festival. Can't narrow it down to 3 songs!

makeitpink · 01/05/2016 17:27

There are so many tunes that make up my life!!! Atm

1 history - 1d not usually a 1d fan but I love this song and it really speaks to me at the moment.

2 dance with my father - not sure who did this one but I clearly remember being 16 yrs old and my daddy taking me to a dinner dance and telling me I was beautiful. That day and my wedding day were the only times he has said this. So this song reminds me that daddies and their daughters have a special bond.

3 summer girl - Leighton meester, great song!!! Who needs a boyfriend i got my girlfriends. So so true. Love this.

Merrylegs · 02/05/2016 11:57

Bigmouth Strikes Again - could be all or any Smiths but I love the way Mozzer sings this on TOGWT - and Andy Kershaw's intro.

Not too Soon - Throwing Muses

Polar Bear -Ride.

I think I like songs with a lot of ah aahs and la da da daaas in them

WolfAlice · 02/05/2016 15:37

Silverchair - Freak (reminds me of being a teen and full of life, even though I thought things were so very difficult at the time as we all do in our teens Grin)

The Beatles - In My Life (makes me think of my lovely grandad, my only stability in a very odd family. I miss him)

WolfAlice - Moaning Lisa Smile (the lyrics don't mean much but it reminds me of listening to it whilst travelling home on the bus on the day I had my intensely regretted termination. Never felt so alone in all my life. Not a 'good' memory but a important one)

cookiemonster66 · 02/05/2016 19:16

We are the Champions by Queen - I was 14 yrs old and taking an overdose when this came on the radio, the words were strong and powerful and full of fighting spirit, I stopped swallowing the pills, focused on the words, and it pulled me through.

Here I go again by Whitesnake - the lyrics are the story of my life, and the video is amazing too! :-
Here I go again on my own
Goin' down the only road I've ever known
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone
'Cause I know what it means to walk along the lonely street of dreams

Only You by Yazoo - I listened to this when I was pregnant with my daughter and felt her move for the first time, like she was dancing in my womb. I also played it at her recent funeral thinking about all the joy she brought me in her life from those very first kicks.

Ratbagcatbag · 02/05/2016 20:01

Blue - Eiffel 65 - I was just starting out on the clubbing scene at 17 when this came out. I'd had an awful oppressive upbringing and I just remember being in a club with my boyfriend and my mates and thinking this is the start of the rest of my life making my own decisions.

A moment like this - kelly clarkson - this was my wedding song. When me and dh were trying to decide I sobbed when this came on. Again back to my upbringing and life, it really did feel like I had been so fortunate when I could have gone so many different ways.

In the arms of an angel - Sarah mcglaghlin (sp?) - i just love how haunting this is. Also feels appropriate how many people who have meant so much to me have since passed. I also think the biggest atrocity in my lifetime I've seen was the twin towers coming down (on TV) and a lot of the coverage had this song playing in later months. It was the first "news" item that moved me to tears.

insancerre · 02/05/2016 20:07

This charming man by the smiths.
Alice by the sisters of mercy
Marian by the sisters of mercy

Very hard choosing just 3 but these all have very personal memories of very special people and times in my life

MeLittleDuckie · 02/05/2016 20:41

I will always love you - Whitney Houston (many an hour spent belting this out with my Mum when I was little)
Touch Me - Susan Sarandon, Rocky Horror Picture Show (my favourite role from my stage days)
Baby I love your ways - Big Mountain (reminds me of listening to the radio with my sister as a teen)

That was so hard! So many other songs worthy of being in there!

glenka · 02/05/2016 21:04

I'm at my most happiest when I am listening to 80's music. I could listen to it all day if I could. There are to many good songs to pick from.
My pick would be anything by Wham or George Michael
The Power of love by Jennifer Rush.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 02/05/2016 22:01

Rock around the clock - reminds me of my dad as he used to play the record to me, also The only way is up by Yazz as it reminds me of him dad dancing on holiday in Jersey in 1988, I was going to play it at his funeral but thought it may be seen as rather inappropriate!
Show me heaven by Maria mcKee is my favourite song, reminds me of being pregnant and just a happy contented time
I don't know much by Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt reminds me of meeting my dh
Most 80s song bring back good memories
90s songs remind me of various stages of my children growing up
I cannot listen to Stay by Shakespeare's sister as it reminds me of when my mum was really ill and not wanting her to go.
