DD is nearly 6 and is an exceptionally voracious reader,(sorry to sound so boastful but it is relevant!)I am struggling to find new material for her and would be really grateful for any ideas. Until now she has been happy with lots of "girly trash", e.g. Felicity Wishes, Rainbow Fairies, My Secret Unicorn but during the Christmas holidays she said that although she still enjoys the stories "the books are mostly the same story".

She has worked her way through most of the "usual suspects" for this age group, e.g. Mrs Pepperpot, Pippi Longstocking, Naughty Little Sister so I've more or less run out of steam from dredging my memory banks. DD is very girly and won't go near Roald Dahl and has surprised me by loathing some popular choices such as Clarice Bean and Olga da Polga.

She reads a lot of non-fiction and school are very helpful on this front, but she wants stories too and given she's expressed an interest in moving beyond the realms of the Tiara Club I'd like to help. Sadly our town doesn't have an independent bookshop so we can't go and search there.

TIA

Bink, ds has loved Varjak Paw!
And must get a copy of the Magic Pudding.

We're not spoilt for choice here so I really just get things over Amazon that I vaguely remember.

Dd (6) enjoys The Wind in the Willows, A Little Princess, The Railway Children, A Secret Garden, Famous Five, Secret Seven

Agree with frogs on non-fiction. I'm an historian and dd loves history so we have quite a few history type books, how the Vikings lived etc. We also have some old second-hand Penguins and others on famous people. She likes those - Florence Nightingale, Abraham Lincoln, etc

The O'Clock Tales by Enid Blyton. Full of pixies, gnomes, goblins and wonderful characters like Witch Upadee and Old Man Greeneyes. It really stimulates their imaginations. My dd is 6 and she loves the stories. They are also short enough to read in one sitting as bedtime tales.

My dd loves the magic kitten books, plus most of the others mentioned.

I also found two lovely books of mine called 'Ponder and William' and 'Teddy Edward' which she likes but doubt that they are still in print!

Willow, I've never heard of the magic kitten books. What are they like? Can you let us know the author's name when you get a chance? It's always good to find new books.

The Little White Horse was one of my favourites at that age.

Also Finn Family Moomintroll, Arthur Ransome books (Swallows and Amazons), The Secret Garden.

Has she tried the Green Knowe books? They're lovely, have ghosts but not too scary.
