The Dark Tower series - can't stop reading

I read The Gunslinger a while back, and didn't feel motivated to carry on, though I love Stephen King. Then I picked up the next one on a whim at the airport and am hooked. I've just finished Wizard and Glass and am dreading getting to the end. I say that as a complete non-fantasy fan, too. But there is no one I know who wouldn't think I was crazy - I've tried to persuade people who like similar books to give it a go, and they all say "Stephen King? Fantasy? No thank you...". Was hoping to find some like minded people here!

Wonderful series, I read it from start to finish as I just couldn't bear to put it down.
Roland is such a great character, (I think he looks like a young Clint Eastwood!)

One of my favourite moments is when Roland is dancing, and if you read it aloud you can actually hear the rhythm of the music and Roland's heels tapping ~ wonderful stuff! Smile

I adore these books. I've read the series three times. It's probably time to start again.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/04/2016 19:10

Humphrey - I'm counting the months until I can re-read them. Trying to wait until November! :)

SusannahD · 02/04/2016 19:12

Dark tower series is amazing, wish I was reading them for the first time again.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 02/04/2016 19:13

This is interesting.

I love Stephen King. I think TheStand is one of my favourite books.

I struggled and didn't finish the first Gunslinger book but I do really like the idea of the story. Is it possible to just read the second book even if I didn't read the first one? I want to like this series as people rave about it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/04/2016 19:14

Simon - I think you do need to get through the first for everything else to make sense. It's v short though, and the second one is brilliant.

HumphreyCobblers · 02/04/2016 19:15

I may start again very soon.

I really love most Stephen King (apart from the time travel one), but the DT are something else. They seem begotten, not made.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 02/04/2016 19:17

Thanks Remus, will give it another shot!

IWouldIfICouldButICant · 02/04/2016 19:26

And Idris Elba as Roland next year, I've just learned! Can you imagine the responsibility of turning books that people love so much into a film?

Not at all happy with IE as Roland. So, so wrong.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 02/04/2016 19:32

No I can't see him as Roland at all.

IWouldIfICouldButICant · 02/04/2016 19:34

I think I can. It's not how I imagined him in my head but Luther definitely has something of a gunslinger about him. And Matthew McConnaughey has always scared me slightly; I can imagine him being a terrifying Flagg.

I have read nearly all Stephen King's books (the Stand is one of my favourite ever books) but for some reason I've never been attracted to the Dark Tower series - not sure why. May have to give them a go as it seems going by all your comments I'm missing out.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/04/2016 19:40

I think this guy would be a good Roland although too young. Daniel Craig could work too if a bit scrawnier. Or Viggo M, of course.

Hygge · 02/04/2016 19:56

Matthew McConaughey is the perfect Flagg, I think. He's not how I imagined Flagg exactly, but when the rumours about him being RF started, everything in me just said "YES!"

Tony I'm sorry about your purse. Mine let out a small sob as well, but the posters are lovely quality and a good size, so worth it I think.

treble it is a lovely website. I've spent a good bit of time looking at it and trying to work out how to make more wall space at home Grin

Gowgirl · 02/04/2016 19:58

I love sk! Have read the lot, don't read the add on chapter in the last book......13 years I waited for the last dark tower I should have stopped and not read the add on!

exWifebeginsat40 · 02/04/2016 20:10

Christopher Walken should be Roland. Idris Elba is utterly wrong!

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 02/04/2016 20:26

I loves me a bit of Idris but he ain't no Roland.

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 02/04/2016 20:28

Love the posters btw, I'm all over that site.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/04/2016 20:35

Had to Google Christopher W. Nope - not feeling it.

JoolsSchmools · 02/04/2016 20:58

I love the DT series. I also got into it before Wolves of the Calla came out. Killed me having to wait.
I miss out Wizard and Glass when I reread them though as I found it a bit meh.
I can still remember the moment I read the ending.

magratsflyawayhair · 02/04/2016 22:51

For Roland they needed someone new someone not yet associated with something else. IE is too known.

magratsflyawayhair · 02/04/2016 22:52

Tell you what though. If anyone can get that gritty realism and bleakness of the books IE can do it.

ClashCityRocker · 03/04/2016 08:25

Not feeling IE at all.

Mostly because it will completely change the dynamic of Susannah's story, and part of her interaction with the townsfolk in wolves. I do think he's a great actor.

Everyone knows we need to travel back in time and get a young(er) Clint Eastwood to play Roland.

Tbh, I was hoping they'd do it as an animation. I think the fantasy element is too strong for it to work as a live-action without it seeming twee.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/04/2016 12:47

Clash - you are absolutely right re the Susannah stuff. A black Roland makes absolutely no sense at all.
