If you are re-reading a book at the moment what is it?

I am re-reading Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver. Really enjoying it, lovely language with fantastic description of the mountains and farm land where the book is based.

I am now curious, do others re-read books? If you are re-reading a book are you enjoying it as much as you did first time round or less?

I am enjoying this more as more interested in her writing about the animals and plants than last time.

I reread things all the time. I'm a speed reader so I don't necessarily get all the nuances the first time around, so rereading is actually really rewarding.

I'm currently working my way through the whole Outlander series again, in preparation for the next series on Prime.

Sgtmajormummy · 31/03/2016 22:45

Jaimx86 I haven't read that book, but anything connected with Prince gets my attention!

Peasandsweetcorn · 31/03/2016 22:46

I love re-reading books and am about to re-read Frenchman's Creek for possibly the 20th time (but the first time for five years or so). Like a PP, I tend to speed read so often pick up nuances the second time around or go back through & look for clues I missed. Life of Pi is a good example of that. I thought there was something a bit unusual about his companion in the boat but hadn't worked out what it was at all.
Hassled - I am a long way off retiring but am already looking forward to re-reading everything I possess when I do!

Chorltonswheelies422 · 31/03/2016 22:47

I re- read a lot

James Herriot
Adrian Mole
Winnie Smith Egyptian series
Frost books
Prime suspect

Chorltonswheelies422 · 31/03/2016 22:48

Stupid spellchecker!!!!

Wilbur Smith not Winnie!
Nearly as bad as jolly cooper on another thread Smile

MissMarpleCat · 31/03/2016 22:54

I re read regularly, particular favourites are:
Great Expectations
Rebecca
Pride and Prejudice
All the Harry Potters

APotterWithAHappyAtmosphere · 01/04/2016 02:01

I have a whole shelf of books I reread on rotation in between new books. There is something indescribably comforting about familiar words and passages; the places they take you and feelings they evoke. Sometimes I am desperate to read a particular story or page of text to recreate the feeling. I am a book junkie!

Many of my favourite rereads are Agatha Christies. Pretty much all Poirots. There is little so relaxing as a whodunnit where you know who dunnit. Finding new clues and remembering the details is delicious.

Other reread favourites:
Katherine
A Town Like Alice
The Cloning of Joanna May
The Day of the Triffids

A serial Agatha Christie re-reader here too!

I re-read stuff ALL the time. DH thinks I'm odd. I re-watch films and TV programmes too.

I was just thinking about which book I have re-read the most. I reckon it's between I Am David and The Blue Castle.

I want to go back and read most of the books on this thread now.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/04/2016 02:06

PG Wodehouse too

APotterWithAHappyAtmosphere · 01/04/2016 02:10

I've just finished a really upsetting novel so now I'm going to have to retrieve a Poirot just to calm down and drop off to sleep Grin

AvaCrowder · 01/04/2016 02:24

Harry Potter followed by Northern Lights.

Anne of Green Gsbles to Rilla of Ingleside.

Agatha Christie.

Woman in White.

Foucaults Pendulum.

I have a pile of books to read, but I love my old favourites.

ClinkyMonkey · 01/04/2016 04:24

Not2, glad to see someone else who liked 'Big Brother'. I loved it and will definitely read it again.

TippyTappyLappyToppy · 01/04/2016 04:34

I dont understand re-readers, or skimmers/scanners!

Skimmers/scanners - what's the point?

Re-readers - who on earth do you find the time? I have loads of time on my hands but I still don't get around to reading all the books I'd like to read once, never mind re-reading some things several times. Confused

I am currently reading The Tea Planters Wife. Set in Sri Lanka in the 20's. It's good so far.

Atenco · 01/04/2016 05:16

I love rereading, as I have an appalling memory and as often as not, it's like reading them for the first time.

Right now I'm rereading Memoires of a Revolutionary, by Peotr Kropotkin, it is absolutely brilliant. He was such a kind and intelligent man and the writing really flows.

FinallyHere · 01/04/2016 12:22

Oh, gladly fatrascals (didn't dare shorten that name...)

My favourite golden age whodunnits, i hope that covers the 20s and 30s include Dorothy L Sayers, Margery Allingham, Ngaio Marsh and (for me, to a lesser extent) Agatha Christie.

I'm sure there are many more...

GnomeDePlume · 01/04/2016 13:36

daisydalrymple my favourite Lord Peter Wimsey stories are the Harriet Vane ones:

  • Strong Poison
  • Have His Carcass
  • Gaudy Night
  • Busman's Honeymoon

By this point the LPW silly ass-ness had gone.

Other favourite re-reads are the Josephine Tey books. I particularly enjoy re-reading The Franchise Affair.

I enjoy Agatha Christies particularly the Miss Marple stories. I love the sense of period (putting the maid on board wages!)

daisydalrymple · 01/04/2016 13:56

Thanks gnome I might give one of those a go then!

BertrandRussell · 01/04/2016 13:58

Gaudy Night is one of my favourite books of all time.

And The Singing Sands.w

lavenderhoney · 01/04/2016 14:04

I re read Somerset Maughan and i also skim read occasionally. My mind thinks of other things when I read and I can resolve problems. It's quite hard to explain, but it only works with books I've read before.

It's quite nice to pick up an old friend and settle down with it, knowing it's going to be a good story and I'm not wasting my time. As such:)

MamaMary · 01/04/2016 14:04

Some kindred spirits on this thread!

I re-read:

Laura Ingalls Wilder
James Herriot
Adrian Mole
Jane Eyre (every three years or so)
The Woman in White
All Jane Austen (although Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey, my least faves, rarely)
The God of Small Things - mean to re-read it

BertieBotts · 01/04/2016 14:05

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

I've read all of the others loads of times - easily over 100 for the first few - but the last one I think I've only read two or three times.

It's interesting to read as an adult.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 01/04/2016 14:06

I also love to re-read books. Favourites are Agatha Christie, the Cadfael series, Harry Potter, Far From the Madding Crowd, The Solitaire Mystery and Chocolat.

Have just finished re-reading Rebecca and Jamaica Inn. Sometimes it's easier to settle down with a familiar story than try and concentrate on something brand new.

SenecaFalls · 01/04/2016 14:06

Gaudy Night is one of my all time favorites, too. I have read it probably 5 or 6 times. There's also a 1980s TV series that has some flaws, but with the wonderful Harriet Walter as Harriet Vane. It's on YouTube.

CharleyDavidson · 01/04/2016 14:08

I re-read a lot, but have built up such a collection of books that I have great gaps in between the readings. I often re read a series if there's a new one coming out, so I've reminded myself of everything before reading the new one. Sometimes I read a new release in a series and THEN go back to the start and read the series again.

I'm currently reading the Kim Harrison Dead Witch Walking series. I do love a fantasy book.

I am waiting a good while before re reading all my Pratchett books. I read them so much that they are like old friends and I like to get the point that I don't really know what's coming next before reading the books again.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 01/04/2016 14:10

Forgot to add that I also read The Hogfather and Wintersmith in the period from the winter solstice to Christmas every year. Helps me get in the festive mood. Smile
